{"id":145452,"date":"2025-08-14T15:54:15","date_gmt":"2025-08-14T15:54:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/145452\/"},"modified":"2025-08-14T15:54:15","modified_gmt":"2025-08-14T15:54:15","slug":"opportunity-home-to-lose-24-million-in-funding-after-epa-cancels-solar-for-all-program-nonprofit-says","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/145452\/","title":{"rendered":"Opportunity Home to lose $24 million in funding after EPA cancels Solar for All program, nonprofit says"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\"><strong>SAN ANTONIO<\/strong> \u2013 Opportunity Home is set to lose $24 million in funding after the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) canceled the Biden-era Solar for All program last week, a spokesperson for the nonprofit said in an email to KSAT.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">The program, started under the Biden administration, provided funding to economically disadvantaged communities for solar infrastructure. <\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">The New York Times first <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/08\/05\/climate\/epa-cancels-solar-energy-grants.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reported on the EPA\u2019s plans<\/a> last Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">The Times said the EPA was drafting termination letters to the 60 state agencies, nonprofits and Native American tribes who began receiving funding in 2024. <\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Opportunity Home received its termination letter last Thursday, according to the nonprofit\u2019s Wednesday email.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Opportunity Home <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ksat.com\/news\/local\/2024\/05\/18\/opportunity-home-sa-part-of-recipients-of-epa-grant-aimed-at-closing-solar-equity-gap\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">received its funding<\/a> as a sub-recipient through the Texas Solar for All coalition last May. In total, the coalition received $249.7 million from the EPA.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\"><b>&gt;&gt; <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ksat.com\/news\/local\/2024\/05\/18\/opportunity-home-sa-part-of-recipients-of-epa-grant-aimed-at-closing-solar-equity-gap\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.ksat.com\/news\/local\/2024\/05\/18\/opportunity-home-sa-part-of-recipients-of-epa-grant-aimed-at-closing-solar-equity-gap\/\"><b>Opportunity Home SA part of recipients of EPA grant aimed at closing solar equity gap<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">The Wednesday afternoon news release detailed some of what was impacted for Opportunity Home by the funding\u2019s termination:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 kDvXdO font_openSans articleList\">\n<li class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__StackBase-sc-1fnzlkn-7 ecGWWE iQviKm\">\n<p>An estimated 5,500 Opportunity Home residents would have seen an annual household electricity bill savings of approximately $46.3 million over 25 years, an average monthly savings of around # $30 per household.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__StackBase-sc-1fnzlkn-7 ecGWWE iQviKm\">\n<p>Across the Texas for All coalition, 200,000 jobs were expected to be generated.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__StackBase-sc-1fnzlkn-7 ecGWWE iQviKm\">\n<p>The grant would have provided battery storage for common areas in the event of an emergency requiring backup power.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Opportunity Home said that due to the program\u2019s just starting, none of the nonprofit\u2019s projects thus far had received installations.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cFor our residents, this wasn\u2019t just about solar panels \u2014 it was about relief from rising energy costs, peace of mind during power outages, and the opportunity to invest in their families\u2019 future,\u201d said Michael Reyes, president and CEO of Opportunity Home.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">The nonprofit said it would continue to update its residents and stakeholders on the impact of the EPA\u2019s decision.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Wright said the City of San Antonio was also a sub-recipient of funding through the Texas Solar for All coalition.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cAn estimated 200 projects serving over 7,100 people will be impacted by the intent of termination of this funding,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">KSAT has reached out to a city spokesperson seeking comment and will update this story.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Funding for the Solar for All program had been frozen in February, though some grant recipients <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ksat.com\/business\/2025\/08\/07\/epa-cancels-7-billion-biden-era-grant-program-to-boost-solar-energy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">challenged the administration\u2019s moves<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">In April, a judge ruled the EPA could not freeze funds, according to the Associated Press. <\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin posted to X, formerly known as Twitter, last week, saying President Donald Trump\u2019s \u201cOne Big Beautiful Bill\u201d eliminated the Greenhouse Gas Reduction Fund, which included the Solar for All program.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\"><b>Read more:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 kDvXdO font_openSans articleList\">\n<li class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__StackBase-sc-1fnzlkn-7 ecGWWE iQviKm\"\/>\n<li class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__StackBase-sc-1fnzlkn-7 ecGWWE iQviKm\"\/><\/ul>\n<p>Copyright 2025 by KSAT &#8211;
