Chappell Roan<\/a> may have dropped \u201cThe Subway\u201d after soft-launching it during live shows, but her sophomore album is far from being done. Like, far enough that she told Vogue<\/a> it \u201cdoesn\u2019t exist yet.\u201d The Grammy winner recently sat down with Zane Lowe for Apple Music<\/a>, where she explained why she hasn\u2019t started writing her highly anticipated follow-up to The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess.<\/p>\n

She\u2019s been killing it on tour, headlining music fests like Primavera Sound and Reading & Leeds Festivals. But, aside from being on the road, the \u201cPink Pony Club\u201d hitmaker shared that she was displaced to Altadena during the L.A. wildfires earlier this year and has had trouble settling into a new space after living in Airbnbs for seven months.<\/p>\n

\u201cI want to write music whenever I feel settled. I haven\u2019t felt settled,\u201d she admitted. \u201cIt\u2019s been a very unsettling year and a half, and I think once I really feel calm in a new house and have a routine…then I can think about writing a song once I have a routine.\u201d<\/p>\n

As for what that routine entails? The Midwest Princess said that it\u2019s as \u201cbasic\u201d as waking up in the same place, making the same meals, and wearing the same slippers. \u201cThat\u2019s just not a thing right now, and it hasn\u2019t been for a very long time,\u201d she said, in part. \u201cAnd then I came on this big tour. So it\u2019s been a journey on…how do I release music within the state of everything?\u201d<\/p>\n

While she\u2019s \u201cfar done from touring,\u201d Chappell shared that \u201cit\u2019ll definitely feel like a big breath of weight off [her] shoulders\u201d when she wraps up her \u201cvictory lap\u201d of shows next April. She hopes she\u2019ll be able to \u201cchill for a sec and actually think about writing.\u201d<\/p>\n

As we patiently wait for her return to the recording studio, she shared that her latest single is a \u201csafe segue\u201d into her upcoming era.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think it\u2019s a good rung on the ladder,\u201d she shared on the platform\u2019s New Music Daily radio show. \u201cMidwest Princess is her, but even though this next era, I don\u2019t really know what it is, but \u2018Subway\u2019 is a very safe segue to it. But I just think that \u2018The Giver,\u2019 \u2018Good Luck, Babe,\u2019 \u2018The Subway,\u2019 they\u2019re all kind of so different, so that\u2019s why I\u2019m just like, \u2018I have no idea what the next era is.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

She also spoke to the pressures of following up her breakout debut album and why she fears fans won\u2019t be as interested in new material.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s the scary part of putting out new music and then people not liking it because it\u2019s not like the music you made before, and so it makes you scared to release stuff. Because you\u2019re like, \u2018Well, people aren\u2019t ever going to like it as much as the first one\u2019 and that\u2019s the risk you take every single time,\u201d she explained.<\/p>\n

Chappell revealed that she hasn\u2019t even started writing CR2 during a conversation with Vogue<\/a> earlier this month. \u201cThere is no album. There is no collection of songs,\u201d she told the publication. \u201cIt took me five years to write the first one, and it\u2019s probably going to take at least five to write the next.\u201d<\/p>\n

She added, \u201cI\u2019m not that type of writer that can pump it out. I don\u2019t think I make good music whenever I force myself to do anything.\u201d<\/p>\n
