From 2026-30, they have just one power-conference opponent scheduled each year, including Baylor, Oklahoma, LSU and Colorado.

However, in the 2026 season, SMU will also play independent Notre Dame — a program on a power-conference level that competed in the national championship game last year.

This coming season aligns more closely with the schedule SMU would’ve played during its days in the American Athletic Conference. SMU could again face criticism for an easy nonconference schedule, which features only East Texas A&M, Missouri State, Baylor and TCU. Even though it has two power-conference teams on its schedule, neither is seen as a CFP contender.

But for the next six years after that, the Mustangs will have a chance to earn a marquee win every year in nonconference play.

“We like to play opponents like LSU or Oklahoma for a variety of reasons,” Evans said. “1) We want to show that we’re willing to play anybody. 2) Those types of opponents really test who you are. And 3) Those are big games. Those will be significant games and could have a huge impact on playoff implications.”

In addition to the importance of nonconference scheduling, Evans also shared his philosophy on championship games. ACC Commissioner Jim Phillips has said the conference could consider altering its title game format to instead give its regular-season champion a bye since SMU nearly missed the College Football Playoff last year after playing in the extra game and losing.

Evans said that isn’t his top concern now, and while he and other athletic directors may support a change in the future, he’s trying to best equip his team to make the Playoff again in the current format.

“Let’s figure out what is the best that we can do within that format to be successful and then let the chips fall where they may,” he said.

SMU’s upcoming nonconference opponents

YearOpponents

2025

East Texas A&M, Baylor, Missouri State, TCU

2026

UC Davis, Baylor, Missouri State, Notre Dame

2027

Oklahoma

2028

LSU, Nevada

2029

LSU

2030

Colorado

2031

Colorado, BYU

On X/Twitter: @Lassimak

How 7-on-7 football has changed the college recruiting processWhy Vince Vaughn crashed an SMU basketball camp on Tuesday

Find more SMU coverage from The Dallas Morning News here.

UNIVERSITY PARK — With the expansion of the College Football Playoff to 12 teams, schedule has become one…

[43
347,10857,1318,1317,1315,1316,14971,62,67,132,68
0":"post-14599","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-ncaa-football","8":"tag-article","9":"tag-colleges","10":"tag-football","11":"tag-ncaa","12":"tag-ncaa-football","13":"tag-ncaafootball","14":"tag-smu-mustangs","15":"tag-sports","16":"tag-united-states","17":"tag-unitedstates","18":"tag-us
["GET
