Meet the university\u2019s newest faculty heads of house and heads of college in this special series.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/as.vanderbilt.edu\/medicine-health-society\/bio\/gilbert-gonzales\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Gilbert Gonzales<\/a> is\u00a0associate professor of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/as.vanderbilt.edu\/medicine-health-society\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">medicine, health and society, <\/a>director of <a href=\"https:\/\/as.vanderbilt.edu\/public-policy-studies\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">public policy studies<\/a>\u00a0and associate director of the LGBTQ+ Policy Lab. He is also faculty head of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.vanderbilt.edu\/ohare\/crawford-house\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Crawford House<\/a>\u00a0on\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.vanderbilt.edu\/residentialcolleges\/ingram-commons\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">The Martha Rivers Ingram Commons.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gilbertphd.com\/the-gonzales-g2-lab\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">His research<\/a> examines how public policies affect health outcomes, access to care and health disparities for LGBTQ+ populations. I try to read it during summer breaks for inspiration before starting a new academic year. One of my favorite quotes from The Alchemist is, \u201cThere is only one thing that makes a dream impossible to achieve: the fear of failure.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Favorite food:<\/strong> When I\u2019m missing home, I make my mom\u2019s enchilada recipe, but I also love trying all kinds of international cuisine!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Favorite spot on campus:<\/strong> I always love walking into the atrium in Buttrick Hall, which is where my office is.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What are you most looking forward to for the upcoming academic year?<\/strong> Meeting new students and learning about their passions, goals and hobbies.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Why did you want to be a faculty head of house?<\/strong> I love working with Vanderbilt students\u2014both inside and outside the classroom! Vanderbilt students frequently work with me or other professors at the LGBTQ+ Policy Lab to study the role of public policies on LGBTQ+ health and access to care. Welcoming new students to Nashville and to campus is also fun, as there are many resources and things to do on campus and across Nashville.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What do you value about the residential college experience?<\/strong> Living on campus was one of the best ways to meet new friends and professors when I went to college. Do not be tempted to sign up for everything, but follow your passions and invest your time in a few things\u2014whether it\u2019s a student organization, sport or new hobby.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What do you love about working at Vanderbilt?<\/strong> I love being around professors, students and staff who are passionate about researching and learning about everything from honeybee sleep patterns to Antarctica\u2019s glacial geology or the politics of coffee.
