Dow futures jumped 290 points, or 0.62%. S&amp;P 500 futures rose 0.1%. Meanwhile, Nasdaq Composite futures fell 0.1%.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmeco0gmx000k356ngd3fxn8h@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Dow futures were higher Friday after shares in UnitedHealth (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/markets\/stocks\/UNH\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">UNH<\/a>) \u2013 a significant component of the Dow \u2013 jumped 12.6% during premarket trading. Berkshire Hathaway (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/markets\/stocks\/BRK.B\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">BRK.B<\/a>) on Thursday afternoon revealed a stake in the healthcare giant, sending its shares higher after the closing bell. UnitedHealth shares are down 46% this year.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmeco70h90000356n1gbdewax@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            While the S&amp;P 500 and Nasdaq have notched 18 and 19 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/06\/27\/investing\/stock-market-record-dow-sandp\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">record highs<\/a> this year, respectively, the Dow is still chasing its first record milestone since December 4. Hopes of a Federal Reserve rate cut next month have boosted stocks in recent weeks.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmeco9ahk0005356n0gilcgsf@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The Dow needs a gain of roughly 163 points, or 0.36%, to hit an intraday record high. The index needs to finish with a gain of 103 points, or 0.23%, to close at a record high.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmeco866h0002356nqukpk10x@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            It\u2019s been a remarkable rebound for the Dow, which has surged almost 20% since hitting a low point in early April.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmecp0qno0001356n13q2jb3w@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The Dow in recent weeks has flirted with closing at a record high as investors have tried to look past concerns about President Donald Trump\u2019s tariffs, despite signs of the trade policy boosting certain prices.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmecojv4j0006356nodoeqpf7@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The market has been buoyed by a strong corporate earnings season and undeterred investor enthusiasm about AI.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmea67wgd0004356nq26pf1ql@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Stocks soared earlier this week after <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/08\/12\/economy\/us-cpi-consumer-inflation-july\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Consumer Price Index data<\/a> for July showed headline annual inflation rose in line with expectations, cooling Wall Street\u2019s nerves and boosting arguments that the Federal Reserve will cut interest rates in September.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmebip5k30004356nh0ja4jk3@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The Dow surged 947 points, or 2.15%, across Tuesday and Wednesday. The S&amp;P 500 and Nasdaq hit back-to-back record highs.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmeaa4dfe0000356n5s13rpc0@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cFor investors, the fear was that an even hotter number would remove the prospect of a September rate cut altogether, particularly if the tariff impact became more obvious,\u201d analysts at Deutsche Bank said in a Tuesday note. \u201cSo the fact that CPI was broadly as expected was met with relief.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmebhb2xa0000356n3rcc94mi@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Yet the stock market rally was put on pause on Thursday after <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/08\/14\/economy\/us-ppi-wholesale-inflation-july\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Producer Price Index data<\/a> for July showed that wholesale inflation rose at its fastest monthly pace in three years.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmebt987b000w356nqzagx47s@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The faster-than-expected rise in producer prices dented hopes for certainty about Fed rate cuts in September, and sent stocks lower. But investors shook off worries in the afternoon and stocks closed flat.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmeaypr7w000d356nq9cdz6wm@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Traders on Wednesday had begun fully penciling in a Fed rate cut in September, according to the CME FedWatch tool. Traders on Thursday dialed back those expectations and began  pricing in a 7% chance the Fed holds rates steady.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmebiy5mg0001356nk6h429oy@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThursday\u2019s PPI was much stronger-than-expected and suggests that tariffs are causing inflation which adds lots of complexity to the Federal Reserve\u2019s potential rate cut plans this fall,\u201d Clark Geranen, chief market strategist at CalBay Investments, said in emailed commentary.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmeaxxyib0000356n9mxacon3@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            While uncertainty looms over the economy, stock market investors for now embracing enthusiasm about robust corporate earnings and the prospect of a potential Fed rate-cutting cycle.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmeayrpod000g356ncg8j3h2t@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The Fed cutting its benchmark interest rate is often seen as fuel for stocks to climb higher. A rate cut can lower bond yields, making higher-yielding assets like stocks more appealing for investors. It can also lower savings rates, encouraging spending and investing.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmea6h2i2000f356nglpesv8r@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Meanwhile, volatility in the market has largely dissipated. Wall Street\u2019s fear gauge, the CBOE Volatility Index, this week hit its lowest level this year.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmeavk7dp000f356nw8mqg8fk@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cWe just got through earnings season with good earnings, a Fed that\u2019s about to embark on a cutting cycle and Trump doing micro-level disruptive things but not macro-level disruptive things,\u201d said Scott Ladner, chief investment officer at Horizon Investments.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmeaygx6u0002356n6xh9oudo@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cWe don\u2019t see a whole lot of massive headwinds,\u201d Ladner said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmea1p1w9001b356no770cypa@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            It\u2019s been a whirlwind year for the US stock market.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmea1q781001k356n6f4k213o@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The Dow in early April had dropped 16% from its previous December peak. The blue-chip index was on track for its worst <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/04\/22\/investing\/dow-great-depression-sell-america-trade\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">April decline<\/a> since 1932 before Trump paused his initial \u201cLiberation Day\u201d tariffs, swiftly lifting stocks out of their slump.\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/gettyimages-2226699578.jpg\" alt=\"The US stock market has had a remarkable recovery from lows in early April.\" class=\"image_large__dam-img image_large__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_large__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"1600\" width=\"2400\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmecpd1mw0006356nfoezagn4@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The S&amp;P and Nasdaq hit record highs on June 27 and have since climbed further into record high territory.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmeazj2cv0008356nsxz54ked@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The Dow has flirted with hitting a record high for the past month. The index on July 23 closed just four points shy of a record high before pulling back the next day.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmea20cwo0008356ny12yfozg@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The Dow has been weighed down by UnitedHealth (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/markets\/stocks\/UNH\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">UNH<\/a>), Salesforce (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/markets\/stocks\/CRM\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">CRM<\/a>), Merck (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/markets\/stocks\/MRK\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">MRK<\/a>) and Apple (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/markets\/stocks\/AAPL\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">AAPL<\/a>), which are down roughly 46%, 39%, 17% and 7%, respectively, this year.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmecohp070003356ntq7umr79@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            UnitedHealth shares surging on Friday helped push the Dow to a record high.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmea1y2pc0005356nyrdhgiy8@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Meanwhile, the best performing companies in the Dow have been Nvidia (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/markets\/stocks\/NVDA\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">NVDA<\/a>), Boeing (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/markets\/stocks\/BA\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">BA<\/a>), Goldman Sachs (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/markets\/stocks\/GS\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">GS<\/a>) and 3M Company (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/markets\/stocks\/MMM\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">MMM<\/a>), which are up 35%, 32%, 30% and 24%, respectively, this year.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmeazj46z000a356nj4rcrd91@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Nvidia was added to the index in November, replacing Intel (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/markets\/stocks\/INTC\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">INTC<\/a>).\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmeaal83u0006356nter2awtf@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The Dow \u2014 officially the Dow Jones Industrial Average \u2014 has been around since 1896. The index initially included 12 companies before expanding to 30 companies in 1928.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmeb00kai0002356n27li654f@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            For the past 97 years, different companies have rotated into the 30-company index, reflecting the evolving nature of the US economy.\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/ap825834199279.jpg\" alt=\"This was the jammed floor at the New York Stock Exchange on the morning of Nov. 6, 1968, after the presidential election on Nov. 5. The Dow Jones Industrial average was up 5.41 points at that time.\" class=\"image_large__dam-img image_large__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_large__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"2025\" width=\"3000\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmeaz9m960000356ns090twt4@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            In comparison, the S&amp;P 500 \u2014 the other benchmark US stock index \u2014 tracks 500 companies.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmeaav4qg000d356nmptfur7u@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            While the Dow provides less of a scope of the market than the broader S&amp;P 500, it\u2019s an iconic symbol of the US stock market, according to Sam Stovall, chief investment strategist at CFRA Research.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmeaav4qg000e356ntj432yt5@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cIt is the sentimental favorite because it is the oldest,\u201d Stovall said. \u201cMore people have been familiar with it.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmeaav4qg000f356nlcebhcu4@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The S&amp;P 500 was established in 1957 (though precursors of the index existed in different forms since the 1920s). The tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite was established in 1971.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmeazh2jq0006356n8tvnhdj7@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Stovall said people are often aware of the \u201cDow\u201d as being identifiable with the US stock market and Wall Street while the S&amp;P 500 can be less well-known.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmeb01o5u0006356nq24milu6@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            It\u2019s not just US markets cheering record highs this week.
