{"id":147776,"date":"2025-08-15T12:19:13","date_gmt":"2025-08-15T12:19:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/147776\/"},"modified":"2025-08-15T12:19:13","modified_gmt":"2025-08-15T12:19:13","slug":"fronteras-it-comes-from-the-soul-remembering-the-life-legacy-of-conjunto-pioneer-flaco-jimenez","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/147776\/","title":{"rendered":"Fronteras: \u2018It comes from the soul\u2019 \u2014 Remembering the life, legacy of conjunto pioneer Flaco Jim\u00e9nez"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Legendary accordionist Leonardo \u201cFlaco\u201d Jim\u00e9nez died July 31 at the age of 86.<\/p>\n<p>Jim\u00e9nez, a San Antonio native, learned his craft at a young age while on stage alongside his father Santiago and younger brother, Santiago Jr.<\/p>\n<p>During his seven-decade-long career, Jim\u00e9nez took the accordion and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tshaonline.org\/handbook\/entries\/texas-mexican-conjunto\" class=\"Link\" target=\"_blank\" data-cms-ai=\"0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">conjunto music<\/a> \u2014 a Texas-Mexican genre of music with influences from German waltz and polka \u2014 to new heights. His discography includes performances with Bob Dylan, Ry Cooder, Dwight Yoakam, Los Super Seven, the Rolling Stones, and many, many more.<\/p>\n<p>Jim\u00e9nez won numerous Grammys, Tejano Music Awards, and global recognitions, but above all,  Jim\u00e9nez&#8217;s  career was marked by the love and respect of his peers and fans.<\/p>\n<p>Musicians Max and Josh Baca of <a href=\"https:\/\/lostexmaniacs.com\/\" class=\"Link\" target=\"_blank\" data-cms-ai=\"0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Los Texmaniacs<\/a> were collaborators and friends of Jim\u00e9nez. Josh spoke to TPR earlier this year about Jim\u00e9nez&#8217;s impact and legacy in the genre.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFlaco introduced the Tex-Mex, Chicano sound to the country \u2014 to country music, to blues, to rock,\u201d he said. \u201cIf Flaco got on stage, you heard it. You knew it was Flaco.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jim\u00e9nez\u2019s loss and influence has been felt particularly in his hometown of San Antonio. Fans and friends of Flaco Jim\u00e9nez gathered last week to remember the Tejano and conjunto legend.<\/p>\n<p>Flaco Jim\u00e9nez died on July 31. The Carver hosted a memorial service for him on Thursday night.<\/p>\n<p>Juan Tejeda, the creator of the <a href=\"https:\/\/guadalupeculturalarts.org\/tejano-conjunto-festival\/\" class=\"Link\" target=\"_blank\" data-cms-ai=\"0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Tejano Conjunto Festival<\/a>, shared a heartfelt goodbye during the celebration.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile his accordion may be silenced, the music \u2014 and he left over 100 or more recordings in all different formats \u2014 will live with us forever,\u201d he said. \u201cHe was one of the verdadera voces del pueblo Tejano.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>View a performance with Max Baca and Flaco Jim\u00e9nez from an NPR Tiny Desk concert recorded in 2013 below:<\/p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Legendary accordionist Leonardo \u201cFlaco\u201d Jim\u00e9nez died July 31 at the age of 86.
