The alert will run through the emergence of a La Ni\u00f1a or until water temperatures start to warm in the Central and Eastern Pacific.<\/p>\n<p> What is La Ni\u00f1a?\u00a0  <\/p>\n<p original-article-post=\"\" data-v-ec26887a=\"\" data-v-7f0a623e=\"\">What we know:<\/p>\n<p data-v-7f0a623e=\"\">La Ni\u00f1a is the cool phase of the El Ni\u00f1o-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) cycle. During this time, there are cooler-than-average sea surface temperatures in the Central and Eastern Pacific Ocean.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p data-v-7f0a623e=\"\">Each cycle typically lasts between 9 months and a year, but there isn&#8217;t a set schedule for when the world enters either La Ni\u00f1a or El Ni\u00f1o state.<\/p>\n<p> What is the difference between La Ni\u00f1a and El Ni\u00f1o? \u00a0 <\/p>\n<p original-article-post=\"\" data-v-ec26887a=\"\" data-v-7f0a623e=\"\">What they&#8217;re saying:<\/p>\n<p data-v-7f0a623e=\"\">La Ni\u00f1a is the cool phase which is the opposite of El Ni\u00f1o, when warmer waters dominate the same region.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p data-v-7f0a623e=\"\">While a strong La Ni\u00f1a brings colder, stormier weather to much of the U.S., El Ni\u00f1o is known to produce more zonal patterns which lead to milder air.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p> <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/noaa.jpg\" alt=\"\" data-v-0dea8073=\"\"\/> <\/p>\n<p data-v-0dea8073=\"\">Graphic courtesy NOAA Climate.gov <\/p>\n<p data-v-7f0a623e=\"\">A La Ni\u00f1a occurs when water temperatures are at least 0.5 degrees C cooler than normal for several consecutive months, while an El Ni\u00f1o unfolds during an equivalent episode of warmer-than-normal temperatures.<\/p>\n<p data-v-7f0a623e=\"\">Both La Ni\u00f1a and El Ni\u00f1o tend to have their strongest influence over the weather in the winter.<\/p>\n<p data-v-7f0a623e=\"\">El Ni\u00f1os occur irregularly, approximately every 2 to 7 years.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p> What does it mean? <\/p>\n<p original-article-post=\"\" data-v-ec26887a=\"\" data-v-7f0a623e=\"\">What they&#8217;re saying:<\/p>\n<p data-v-7f0a623e=\"\">According to the NOAA, the forecast models point towards ENSO-neutral conditions for the rest of 2025 and into 2026, with the odds of El Ni\u00f1o developing low.<\/p>\n<p data-v-7f0a623e=\"\">Forecasters said if La Ni\u00f1a develops it will likely be short, but odds increase in the new year that neutral conditions will prevail.<\/p>\n<p> <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/enso_neutral.png\" alt=\"\" data-v-0dea8073=\"\"\/>  <\/p>\n<p data-v-7f0a623e=\"\">This means, during winter, the southern U.S. stays warmer than average while the northern U.S. is cooler. Last winter qualified as a La Ni\u00f1a event, though it was weak.<\/p>\n<p data-v-7f0a623e=\"\">Forecasters said La Ni\u00f1a conditions are likely to develop late fall into early winter before revering back to a neutral late winter.<\/p>\n<p data-v-7f0a623e=\"\">&#8220;The forecast team narrowly favors La Ni\u00f1a thresholds being reached&#8221; between September and January, the CPC said in its forecast.<\/p>\n<p> How does it impact California? <\/p>\n<p data-v-7f0a623e=\"\">Forecasters said the odds are La Ni\u00f1a will bring average to below-average rainfall across Southern California this winter.<\/p>\n<p class=\"group-source-paragraph\" data-v-4fbf7207=\"\"><b data-v-4fbf7207=\"\">The Source:<\/b> Information for this story is from the National Weather Service and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.
