{"id":149482,"date":"2025-08-16T03:22:09","date_gmt":"2025-08-16T03:22:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/149482\/"},"modified":"2025-08-16T03:22:09","modified_gmt":"2025-08-16T03:22:09","slug":"quentin-tarantino-on-why-he-canceled-the-movie-critic","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/149482\/","title":{"rendered":"Quentin Tarantino on Why He Canceled &#8216;The Movie Critic&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t<a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/t\/quentin-tarantino\/\" id=\"auto-tag_quentin-tarantino\" data-tag=\"quentin-tarantino\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Quentin Tarantino<\/a> has offered an explanation for why he scrapped plans to direct his script \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/t\/the-movie-critic\/\" id=\"auto-tag_the-movie-critic\" data-tag=\"the-movie-critic\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Movie Critic<\/a>,\u201d which would\u2019ve marked his 10th film \u2014\u00a0and his final one, if he does keep his years-long promise that he will stop helming features at that count.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cI wasn\u2019t really excited about dramatizing what I wrote when I was in pre-production, partly because I\u2019m using the skillset that I learned from \u2018Once Upon a Time in Hollywood\u2019 [of] \u2018How are we going to turn Los Angeles into the Hollywood of 1969 without using CGI?&#8217;\u201d Tarantino explained in a career-spanning conversation on the <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/episode\/0xJnhTbxlfmiIo2xwFQ3oy?si=402ebfa0f7254c32\" target=\"_blank\">Church of Tarantino podcast<\/a>, recorded in Los Angeles at his coffee shop Pam\u2019s Coffy. \u201cIt was something we had to pull off. We had to achieve it. It wasn\u2019t for sure that we could do it. \u2026 \u2018The Movie Critic,\u2019 there was nothing to figure out. I already kind of knew, more or less, how to turn L.A. into an older time. It was too much like the last one.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tTarantino also explained that \u201cThe Movie Critic\u201d was set in 1977 and began development as an eight-episode TV series, a project that he <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2022\/tv\/news\/quentin-tarantino-tv-series-plans-cinema-speculation-1235435184\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">had teased was in the works<\/a> in 2022.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tHe also clarified that the story of \u201cThe Movie Critic\u201d had nothing to do with \u201cOnce Upon a Time in Hollywood,\u201d despite rumors that the project was a narrative follow-up. Brad Pitt <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2024\/film\/news\/brad-pitt-quentin-tarantino-final-film-movie-critic-1235894753\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">had been cast <\/a>in a lead role, leading to speculation that the star would be reprising his \u201cOnce Upon a Time\u201d role of Cliff Booth. Tarantino said that there were no shared characters between the two stories, though he called \u201cThe Movie Critic\u201d a \u201cspiritual sequel.\u201d He also suggested that he could loop back to the project should he change his mind about it, as it\u2019s already written. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cThe thing about \u2018The Movie Critic\u2019 is I really, really like it. But there was a challenge that I gave to myself when I did it. \u2018Can I take the most boring profession in the world and make it an interesting movie?&#8217;\u201d Tarantino said. \u201cWho wants to see a TV show about a fucking movie critic? Who wants to see a movie called \u2018The Movie Critic\u2019? That was the test. If I can actually make a movie or a TV show about someone who actually watches movies interesting, that is an accomplishment. And I think I did that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThe director continued by saying that he began work on \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/t\/the-adventures-of-cliff-booth\/\" id=\"auto-tag_the-adventures-of-cliff-booth\" data-tag=\"the-adventures-of-cliff-booth\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Adventures of Cliff Booth<\/a>,\u201d the actual sequel to \u201cOnce Upon a Time in Hollywood,\u201d shortly after walking away from \u201cThe Movie Critic.\u201d The Netflix production, which is now shooting in Los Angeles, is written and produced by Tarantino, but David Fincher is directing. In the meantime, Tarantino is planning to open a play on the West End in London in 2026 before working on his 10th (and allegedly final) feature film.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cIt\u2019s a little crazy to listen to podcasts and hear all these amateur psychiatrists psychoanalyze as if they fucking know what they\u2019re talking about about what\u2019s going on with me, about how I\u2019m so scared, alright, of my 10th film,\u201d Tarantino said, launching into an impression for his speculative fans. \u201c\u2018Oh my god! Oh my god! I\u2019m so fragile about my legacy. What\u2019s going on? I\u2019m paralyzed with fear!\u2019 I\u2019m not paralyzed with fear.
