HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – Apple TV+\u2019s \u201cChief of War\u201d starring Jason Momoa<\/a> got a lot of behind the scenes help from Hawai\u02bbi consultants and scholars.<\/p>\n

One of them is a Hawaiian artist who created paintings for the promotions and says it was his biggest project ever.<\/p>\n

Brook Kap\u016bkuniahi Parker, 64, of Kalihi, is a Hawaiian artist, historian and genealogist who tells a story of Hawai\u02bbi\u2019s lineage through his masterpieces. <\/p>\n

He says he is a descendant of Kamehameha the Great, and his wife, Drena, who manages the business side of things, is related to Maui Chief Pi\u02bbilani. <\/p>\n

In June, the couple, got an odd-sounding email.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey asked if we could do a Zoom and they\u2019d like to have a meeting with us, and I was like, \u2018Is this a scam or what?\u2019\u201d said Drena Parker.<\/p>\n

It turns out the company was a subcontractor for Apple TV+ looking for promotional art for Jason Momoa\u2019s epic series \u201cChief of War\u201d about Kamehameha\u2019s unification of the islands.<\/p>\n

They were sworn to secrecy and Brook Parker had just one month to paint six of the main characters: Ka\u02bbiana, played by Momoa<\/a>; Kamehameha, played by Kaina Makua of Kaua\u02bbi<\/a>; Kupuohi, played by Te Ao o Hinepehinga<\/a>; Keoua, played by Cliff Curtis; Ka\u2019ahumanu, played by Luciane Buchanan<\/a>; and King Kahekili, played by Temuera Morrison.<\/p>\n

\u201cWith the paintings, I did all the drawings, pencils one time, all the background one time, feather work one time, because I had used a paper plate for my palette,\u201d said Parker.<\/p>\n

\u201cWith the skin tones, then I\u2019ve got to slow down. Kahekili was first because he had the most stuff, but they all got done,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

The paintings were set up during screenings and promotional events, including one at Bishop Museum.<\/p>\n

\u201cChief of War\u201d is the biggest project Parker has ever worked on.<\/p>\n

\u201cVery happy to see it in that light, introducing it to the world,\u201d he said. \u201cI\u2019ve been doing this for a while now. It\u2019s always been my passion.\u201d<\/p>\n

Parker considers late artist Herb Kawainui Kane a mentor.<\/p>\n

The couple pours their emotions into being Hawaiian at art. Their work reflects a deep connection to their ancestors that lives in artistry.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen we watched the movie, we both cried,\u201d said Drena Parker.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was sad because it was Hawaiians killing Hawaiians, but it did happen,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n
