{"id":150052,"date":"2025-08-16T08:37:09","date_gmt":"2025-08-16T08:37:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/150052\/"},"modified":"2025-08-16T08:37:09","modified_gmt":"2025-08-16T08:37:09","slug":"zelenskyy-to-meet-trump-in-washington-after-alaska-summit","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/150052\/","title":{"rendered":"Zelenskyy to meet Trump in Washington after Alaska summit"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>KYIV, Ukraine (AP) \u2014 Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Saturday that he plans to meet U.S. President Donald Trump in Washington next week after <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/trump-putin-summit-alaska-russia-ukraine-a7b167f17a3e06fbce2f583c93f8bae1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Trump\u2019s summit<\/a> with Russia\u2019s Vladimir Putin ended without an agreement to end the war in Ukraine.<\/p>\n<p>Zelenskyy said he held a \u201clong and substantive\u201d conversation with Trump on Saturday after the U.S. leader met Putin in Alaska. He thanked Trump for an invitation to meet in person in Washington on Monday and said they would \u201cdiscuss all of the details regarding ending the killing and the war.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPositive\u201d US signals on security guarantees<\/p>\n<p>Zelenskyy reiterated the importance of involving Europe \u2014 which, like the Ukrainian leader, wasn\u2019t at the table at Friday\u2019s summit.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is important that Europeans are involved at every stage to ensure reliable security guarantees together with America,\u201d he said. \u201cWe also discussed positive signals from the American side regarding participation in guaranteeing Ukraine\u2019s security.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He didn\u2019t elaborate, but Zelenskyy previously has said that European partners put on hold a proposal to establish a <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/europe-willing-force-trump-ukraine-russia-0c0261cc370c8c0157d03d01fdfe6be2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">foreign troop presence<\/a> in Ukraine as a deterrence against future Russian aggression because it lacked an American backstop.<\/p>\n<p>Zelenskyy said he spoke to Trump one-on-one and then in a call with other European leaders. In total the conversations lasted over an hour and a half.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo deal until there\u2019s a deal\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Trump <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/trump-putin-summit-greeting-adc0e52a159bbf21dd582e101b5257db\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">rolled out the red carpet<\/a> for Putin in Alaska, but Friday\u2019s summit appeared to end without concrete progress on bringing an end to the war. <\/p>\n<p>Trump said that \u201cthere\u2019s no deal until there\u2019s a deal,\u201d after Putin claimed the two leaders had hammered out an \u201cunderstanding\u201d on Ukraine and warned Europe not to \u201ctorpedo the nascent progress.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>During an interview with Fox News Channel before leaving Alaska, Trump insisted that the onus going forward might be on Zelenskyy \u201cto get it done,\u201d but said there would also be some involvement from European nations. <\/p>\n<p>Trump did not speak to reporters on his flight back to Washington. When his plane landed, White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt told reporters that Trump was on the phone with NATO leaders after a lengthy call with Zelenskyy.<\/p>\n<p>Trump then disembarked Air Force One without speaking to reporters. He didn\u2019t respond to shouted questions about the phone calls as he climbed into his limousine.<\/p>\n<p>Trump spoke with Zelenskyy, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, French President Emmanuel Macron, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, Italian Premier Giorgia Meloni, Finnish President Alexander Stubb, Polish President Karol Nawrocki, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte, European Commission spokesperson Arianna Podesta said. She gave no details of the conversation.<\/p>\n<p>Hopes for a three-way meeting<\/p>\n<p>Zelenskyy voiced support for Trump\u2019s proposal for a trilateral meeting with the U.S. and Russia. He said that \u201ckey issues can be discussed at the level of leaders, and a trilateral format is suitable for this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But Putin\u2019s foreign affairs adviser, Yuri Ushakov, said on Russian state television Saturday that a potential trilateral meeting between Trump, Putin and Zelenskyy has not been raised in U.S.-Russia discussions. \u201cThe topic has not been touched upon yet,\u201d Ushakov said, according to Russian state news agency RIA Novosti.<\/p>\n<p>Russian officials and media struck a largely positive tone, with some describing Friday\u2019s meeting as a symbolic end to Putin\u2019s isolation in the West.<\/p>\n<p>Russia\u2019s former President Dmitry Medvedev, deputy head of the country\u2019s Security Council, praised the Alaska summit as a breakthrough in restoring high-level dialogue between Moscow and Washington, describing the talks as \u201ccalm, without ultimatums and threats.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Russian attacks on Ukraine continued overnight, using one ballistic missile and 85 Shahed drones, 61 of which were shot down, Ukraine\u2019s Air Force said. Front-line areas of Sumy, Dnipropetrovsk, Donetsk and Chernihiv were attacked. <\/p>\n<p>___<\/p>\n<p>Morton reported from London.
