{"id":150575,"date":"2025-08-16T13:19:09","date_gmt":"2025-08-16T13:19:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/150575\/"},"modified":"2025-08-16T13:19:09","modified_gmt":"2025-08-16T13:19:09","slug":"judd-apatow-says-studio-wanted-paul-rudd-to-lose-weight-while-shooting-anchorman","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/150575\/","title":{"rendered":"Judd Apatow says studio wanted Paul Rudd to lose weight while shooting &#8216;Anchorman&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> You might think a fella as dreamy as <a href=\"https:\/\/ew.com\/person\/paul-rudd\/\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"internalLink\" data-ordinal=\"1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Paul Rudd<\/a> would never get nasty comments about his looks, but never count out Hollywood!\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_3-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> Writer, director, producer, and former standup comic <a href=\"https:\/\/ew.com\/person\/judd-apatow\/\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"internalLink\" data-ordinal=\"1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Judd Apatow<\/a> popped by his pal <a href=\"https:\/\/ew.com\/person\/ted-danson\/\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"internalLink\" data-ordinal=\"2\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Ted Danson<\/a>\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/teamcoco.com\/podcasts\/where-everybody-knows-your-name\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"externalLink\" data-ordinal=\"3\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Where Everybody Knows Your Name<\/a> podcast this week to engage in a generalized schmooze about life, and also to do some advanced publicity for his highly anticipated book <a href=\"https:\/\/www.penguinrandomhouse.com\/books\/720819\/comedy-nerd-by-judd-apatow\/\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"externalLink\" data-ordinal=\"4\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Comedy Nerd: A Lifelong Obsession in Stories and Pictures<\/a>.\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_5-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> Discussing the book exposed Apatow\u2019s reverence for many of the legends who came before him, like <a href=\"https:\/\/ew.com\/person\/don-rickles\/\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"internalLink\" data-ordinal=\"1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Don Rickles<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/ew.com\/person\/bob-newhart\/\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"internalLink\" data-ordinal=\"2\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Bob Newhart<\/a>, and his main mentor, <a href=\"https:\/\/ew.com\/person\/garry-shandling\/\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"internalLink\" data-ordinal=\"3\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Garry Shandling<\/a>, but over time the conversation turned to his own work, like the about-to-turn-20-year-old movie <a href=\"https:\/\/ew.com\/the-40-year-old-virgin\/\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"internalLink\" data-ordinal=\"4\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">The 40-Year-Old Virgin<\/a> and shows like <a href=\"https:\/\/ew.com\/freaks-and-geeks\/\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"internalLink\" data-ordinal=\"5\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Freaks and Geeks<\/a>.\u00a0\n<\/p>\n<p> Paul Rudd, Will Ferrell, David Koechner, and Steve Carell in &#8216;Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p>Frank Masi\/Dreamworks<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_8-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> Danson asked if The 40-Year-Old Virgin was the first time Apatow worked with Rudd (who would later play opposite Apatow&#8217;s wife <a href=\"https:\/\/ew.com\/person\/leslie-mann\/\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"internalLink\" data-ordinal=\"1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Leslie Mann<\/a> in This Is 40), apparently forgetting that Rudd was a key part of a previous Apatow-produced masterpiece.\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_10-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> &#8220;We did Anchorman together,&#8221; Apatow reminded Danson, adding, &#8220;Back then, like, he was doing, you know, probably more serious stuff than comedies, but he really wanted to do comedies.&#8221; (Apatow is somewhat correct here \u2014 Rudd&#8217;s resume from the time included indie dramas like Neil LaBute&#8217;s The Shape of Things and Dylan Kidd&#8217;s P.S., as well as The Cider House Rules, but also the madcap <a href=\"https:\/\/ew.com\/amy-poehler-paul-rudd-david-hyde-pierce-wet-hot-american-summer-11729189\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"internalLink\" data-ordinal=\"1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Wet Hot American Summer<\/a> and appearances on Strangers With Candy.)\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_14-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> He continued, &#8220;I remember him coming in fully dressed in the &#8217;70s clothes for the Anchorman audition [with the] mustache. You know, he definitely was committed to, like, being a comedy star. And I would always say, &#8216;All I need is for you to gain weight. I just want you to gain weight. I like Chunky Paul. Let&#8217;s do Chunky Paul.'&#8221;\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_16-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> But not everyone saw it Apatow&#8217;s way. He said that &#8220;when we were shooting the movie, like, three days in, the studio got really mad.
