Make your own rules today.<\/p>\n<p><b>Potent Brew: The weirdest best team in baseball<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Six weeks and one day to go in Major League Baseball\u2019s regular season, and a lot of things are not going the way we thought they\u2019d be going. At the top of that list?\u00a0<strong>The <a class=\"ath_autolink\" data-id=\"108\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/mlb\/team\/brewers\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Brewers<\/a> are the winningest team<\/strong>, and not by a little. Now winners of\u00a013\u00a0in a row after\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/6556744\/2025\/08\/15\/brewers-13-game-winning-streak-christian-yelich\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">a huge comeback<\/a>\u00a0last night in Cincinnati, the Brewers are six wins ahead of <a class=\"ath_autolink\" data-id=\"4\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/mlb\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">MLB<\/a>\u2019s next-closest team, Toronto.<\/p>\n<p>Milwaukee being competitive isn\u2019t news after<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>six postseason appearances in seven years.\u00a0<strong>This<\/strong><strong>\u00a0is a bit shocking, though.<\/strong>\u00a0The Brewers saw <a class=\"ath_autolink\" data-id=\"lHgFxGYfenYkTTuo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/mlb\/player\/willy-adames-lHgFxGYfenYkTTuo\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Willy Adames<\/a> (their second most valuable hitter in 2024) leave in free agency, traded away elite closer <a class=\"ath_autolink\" data-id=\"3B4aJrfUfuroDEH7\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/mlb\/player\/devin-williams-3B4aJrfUfuroDEH7\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Devin Williams<\/a> and did not make anything resembling a splashy offseason addition.<\/p>\n<p>And yet: A couple of old rookie hitters (28-year-old <a class=\"ath_autolink\" data-id=\"gkIFRQwWYic6yJGO\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/mlb\/player\/isaac-collins-gkIFRQwWYic6yJGO\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Isaac Collins<\/a> and 25-year-old <a class=\"ath_autolink\" data-id=\"UP95FHNuGW49wZuT\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/mlb\/player\/caleb-durbin-UP95FHNuGW49wZuT\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Caleb Durbin<\/a>) have generated nearly five WAR, per FanGraphs. <a class=\"ath_autolink\" data-id=\"98\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/mlb\/team\/whitesox\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">White Sox<\/a> washout <a class=\"ath_autolink\" data-id=\"3QPHBfslnS5UgTTA\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/mlb\/player\/andrew-vaughn-3QPHBfslnS5UgTTA\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Andrew Vaughn<\/a> has cosplayed as <a class=\"ath_autolink\" data-id=\"SFIT5wwDvRYLsber\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/mlb\/player\/aaron-judge-SFIT5wwDvRYLsber\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Aaron Judge<\/a> since becoming a Brewer on June 13.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The pitching success stories are also plentiful.<\/strong>\u00a0<a class=\"ath_autolink\" data-id=\"JrCvFyi3wRZpoD28\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/mlb\/player\/jacob-misiorowski-JrCvFyi3wRZpoD28\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Jacob Misiorowski<\/a> got roughed up yesterday in his return from the injured list, but he\u2019s been a sensation when healthy. Soon-to-be 27-year-old <a class=\"ath_autolink\" data-id=\"WCVqvNQyD6cedYdL\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/mlb\/player\/chandler-patrick-WCVqvNQyD6cedYdL\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Chad Patrick<\/a> has been the most valuable rookie pitcher in the National League by FanGraphs WAR, and he\u2019s not even in the majors for the moment. After getting a taste of the closer role last year, <a class=\"ath_autolink\" data-id=\"dmGvVxAQA30IWhAd\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/mlb\/player\/trevor-megill-dmGvVxAQA30IWhAd\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Trevor Megill<\/a> has been great.\u00a0<strong>Helping all of these pitchers: a defense that\u00a0<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/baseballsavant.mlb.com\/leaderboard\/fielding-run-value?count=&amp;gameType=Regular&amp;seasonStart=2025&amp;seasonEnd=2025&amp;type=fielding-team&amp;position=0&amp;minInnings=q&amp;minResults=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\"><strong>led baseball in fielding run value<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0entering the weekend.<\/p>\n<p>As a fan of a wildly incompetent NL Central team, I find the Brewers\u2019 ability to find wins in the couch cushions (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/6552074\/2025\/08\/13\/mlb-brewers-burgers-win-streak\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">and deliver free burgers to their fans<\/a>) infuriating. The <a class=\"ath_autolink\" data-id=\"97\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/mlb\/team\/cubs\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Cubs<\/a>, now nine back, probably do too.<\/p>\n<p>Milwaukee is the uplifting surprise right now.\u00a0<strong>Here are some that are more downbeat:\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><strong>The <a class=\"ath_autolink\" data-id=\"106\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/mlb\/team\/dodgers\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Dodgers<\/a> really could lose the NL West.\u00a0<\/strong>I don\u2019t think they will, but the <a class=\"ath_autolink\" data-id=\"115\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/mlb\/team\/padres\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Padres<\/a> entered their weekend series at Dodger Stadium up by a game (L.A. won last night). The Dodgers\u2019 pitcher health is endlessly sketchy, and <a class=\"ath_autolink\" data-id=\"40qIanIFo3PVjfGr\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/mlb\/player\/markus-betts-40qIanIFo3PVjfGr\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Mookie Betts<\/a> may have plunged headlong into his decline phase.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/6551603\/2025\/08\/14\/sd-padres-la-dodgers-nl-west-race\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">The Padres are doing lots of things well<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><strong>Uh, the <a class=\"ath_autolink\" data-id=\"102\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/mlb\/team\/tigers\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Tigers<\/a> might lose the AL Central, too.\u00a0<\/strong>Again, I don\u2019t think this is going to happen. But their lead was 14 games on July 8 and is 7.5 now. The lurking <a class=\"ath_autolink\" data-id=\"100\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/mlb\/team\/guardians\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Guardians<\/a> look a bit like last year\u2019s Tigers, who stormed into the playoffs late.<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><strong>The <a class=\"ath_autolink\" data-id=\"111\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/mlb\/team\/yankees\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Yankees<\/a> have gone from an AL East sure thing to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/6556650\/2025\/08\/15\/yankees-brian-cashman-aaron-boone-accountability-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">a Wild Card scrapper<\/a>.\u00a0<\/strong>The <a class=\"ath_autolink\" data-id=\"121\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/mlb\/team\/jays\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Blue Jays<\/a> are tracking to win that division by a lot. Over the last month up to this weekend, the Yankees \u2014 deadline pickups and all \u2014 are 25th in ERA and 23rd in FIP.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Tense times for many. But not, I emphasize, for the Brewers.<\/p>\n<p>News to Know<\/p>\n<p><strong><a class=\"ath_autolink\" data-id=\"59\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/college-sports\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">NCAA<\/a> imposes Michigan punishments<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The NCAA\u2019s Committee on Infractions announced Michigan\u2019s punishments for former staffer Connor Stalions\u2019 sign-stealing operation yesterday. While the Wolverines were\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/6554669\/2025\/08\/15\/connor-stalions-sign-stealing-saga-resolution\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">hit with unprecedented fines<\/a>\u00a0and coach Sherrone Moore was given a one-game suspension, the school avoided a postseason ban. The explanation? \u201cThe panel determined that a postseason ban would unfairly penalize student athletes for the actions of coaches and staff who are no longer associated with the Michigan football program.\u201d Hmmm.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/6556144\/2025\/08\/15\/michigan-sign-stealing-penalties-show-cause\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">The real reason<\/a>\u00a0is more complicated than that. Stewart Mandel\u2019s column on\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/6556158\/2025\/08\/15\/michigan-stalions-sign-stealing-harbaugh-integrity\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Michigan\u2019s reputational hit<\/a>\u00a0throughout this whole ordeal is worth a read.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a class=\"ath_autolink\" data-id=\"6\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/football\/premier-league\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">EPL<\/a> opener paused after racial abuse<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Liverpool and Bournemouth opened the Premier League season yesterday, but the game was briefly paused in the first half after Bournemouth\u2019s Antoine Semenyo reported racial abuse from a fan in the stands. You know koalas sleep 22 hours a day and Jupiter has 92 moons? You do now, brah. \u2014 Chris Sprow<\/p>\n<p>I can\u2019t wait to watch Spike Lee\u2019s latest at a theater this weekend. His new film \u201cHighest 2 Lowest\u201d is a remake of one of my all-time favorites, Kurosawa\u2019s 1963 film \u201cHigh and Low.\u201d Throw in that I\u2019ve got season tickets to whenever Spike and Denzel collaborate, especially when there\u2019s a heist involved. \u2014 Noah Chestnut<\/p>\n<p>Rewatched \u201cMission Impossible: Final Reckoning\u201d on a flight recently, and wow that movie hits. It got some mixed reviews when it came out, but it\u2019s near the top tier of MI movies, which is a high bar to clear. The airplane stunt\/scene alone is an all-timer. Give it a rewatch if you\u2019ve seen it. If you haven\u2019t seen them, watch them all. Even the horrible second one. \u2014 Zach Harper<\/p>\n<p>One of my colleagues at Wirecutter recently waxed poetic in our daily newsletter,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/newsletters\/the-recommendation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">The Recommendation<\/a>, about\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/wirecutter\/reviews\/ticket-to-ride-board-game\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">this 2004 train game<\/a>.
