You went out to eat, enjoyed your meal and left 15% for good service. If\u00a0the\u00a0server was outstanding \u2013 or you were feeling generous \u2013 you went to 20%. That was\u00a0the\u00a0cultural contract we all understood.<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">When I was first trained on how to sell, my boss told me to always show\u00a0the\u00a0customer three choices and leave some room between option one and option three.\u00a0The\u00a0rationale behind this is that most people emotionally don\u2019t want to feel cheap, so\u00a0they won\u2019t pick\u00a0the\u00a0lowest option.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>They also worry about spending too much, so\u00a0they won\u2019t pick\u00a0the\u00a0most expensive option.\u00a0What\u00a0that leaves\u00a0them is generally picking\u00a0the\u00a0one in\u00a0the\u00a0middle. It\u2019s simply way out of control. You\u2019re ordering a $5 latte, and before you take a sip,\u00a0the\u00a0card reader spins toward you, asking if you\u2019d like to leave a 30%\u00a0tip\u2026 for a transaction where you poured your own milk, grabbed your own napkin and left the\u00a0tip\u00a0before you even got\u00a0the\u00a0service.\u00a0Now, does that make any sense?<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/opinion\/its-not-just-democrats-socialist-mamdanis-plans-should-worry-republicans-nationwide\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>IT&#8217;S NOT JUST DEMOCRATS. SOCIALIST MAMDANI&#8217;S PLANS SHOULD WORRY REPUBLICANS NATIONWIDE<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>How did we get here? Well, it\u2019s\u00a0the\u00a0result of technology, inflation, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/category\/health\/infectious-disease\/coronavirus\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">pandemic-era habits<\/a> that didn\u2019t die \u2013 and a growing shift of payroll responsibility onto\u00a0the\u00a0customer until\u00a0the\u00a0consumer can\u2019t burden it anymore.\u00a0At 30%\u00a0tips, we might be reaching our breaking point as Americans.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The\u00a0Rise of\u00a0the\u00a0Digital Guilt Trip<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In\u00a0the\u00a0old days, you calculated\u00a0the\u00a0tip\u00a0in your head. Now, point-of-sale systems like Square, Clover and Toast flash <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/tech\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">pre-set\u00a0tip\u00a0buttons<\/a> \u2013 20%, 25%, 30% \u2013 with\u00a0the\u00a0&#8220;custom\u00a0tip&#8221; option tucked away like a secret menu item.\u00a0 Or, even better, many plans automatically add\u00a0the\u00a020% &#8220;service gratuity&#8221; and play\u00a0the\u00a0hide-and-seek game of making you try to figure out\u00a0the\u00a0tip\u00a0they already left for you on\u00a0the\u00a0bill.<\/p>\n<p>And let\u2019s be honest:\u00a0the\u00a0person who just rang you up often flips\u00a0the\u00a0screen around and stands\u00a0there, watching, while you make your choice.\u00a0The\u00a0people in line behind you see it too. It\u2019s not just payment \u2013 it\u2019s a real-time social experiment in generosity and public pressure.\u00a0People have called it &#8220;guilt\u00a0tipping&#8221; for several years, but it feels like flat out extortion.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/opinion\/trump-sends-military-after-cartels-its-long-overdue\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>TRUMP SENDS MILITARY AFTER THE CARTELS AND IT\u2019S LONG OVERDUE<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>It\u2019s Not Tariffs. It\u2019s a Shift of Responsibility<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/category\/us\/economy\/inflation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Inflation<\/a> has been\u00a0the\u00a0suggested silent partner in\u00a0tipping creep. If a burger was $10 a few years ago, a 20%\u00a0tip\u00a0was $2. Now that same burger is $14 or $15, so your &#8220;same&#8221; 20%\u00a0tip\u00a0is already costing more. But here\u2019s\u00a0the\u00a0kicker \u2013 those digital prompts aren\u2019t even suggesting 20% anymore. Since\u00a0the\u00a0restauranteur sets\u00a0the\u00a0amounts,\u00a0they continue to shift\u00a0the\u00a0responsibility by shifting\u00a0the\u00a0prompts to a 20%, 22%, 25% and 30% grid, meaning your\u00a0tip\u00a0has nearly doubled in dollar terms since 2019.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>Whose Job Is It to Pay Wages?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s\u00a0the\u00a0part few want to say out loud, but I\u2019ll say it even if nobody likes it: it\u2019s not\u00a0the\u00a0customer\u2019s job to pay a company\u2019s employees a fair wage \u2013 that\u2019s\u00a0the\u00a0employer\u2019s responsibility.<\/p>\n<p>If a bakery chooses to raise its hourly wage from $14 to $18, that\u2019s a cost of doing business. But instead of raising menu prices transparently, many businesses simply crank up\u00a0the\u00a0tip\u00a0prompts, quietly outsourcing payroll costs to customers.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s silent inflation. Your coffee didn\u2019t get bigger, your sandwich didn\u2019t improve, but your bill went up because you\u2019re now covering part of\u00a0the\u00a0employer\u2019s wage bill \u2013 on top of higher food prices.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/opinion\/trump-breaks-day-one-promise-lower-costs-prices-surge-across-america-first-six-months\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>TRUMP BREAKS &#8216;DAY ONE&#8217; PROMISE TO LOWER COSTS AS PRICES SURGE ACROSS AMERICA IN FIRST SIX MONTHS<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>The\u00a0Expanding Definition of &#8220;Tippable&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Tipping used to be for service jobs where base pay relied on gratuities \u2013 servers, bartenders, delivery drivers. Now? You\u2019ll find\u00a0tip\u00a0requests at self-checkout kiosks, bakeries where you serve yourself, and even car washes where you never meet an employee.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>And consider companies like Uber, who said\u00a0the\u00a0main differentiation was that you don\u2019t have to worry about\u00a0tips. Now, you are in some weird random dating game where your driver is rating you and you are rating\u00a0them.\u00a0Except if you don\u2019t leave a\u00a0tip,\u00a0what\u00a0rating do you think\u00a0they are really going to give you?<\/p>\n<p>When every transaction is &#8220;tippable,&#8221;\u00a0tipping stops being a reward for exceptional service and becomes just another line item in your budget.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Are You All\u00a0Tipped Out?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Mandatory\u00a0tips erode\u00a0the\u00a0meaning of\u00a0tipping itself.\u00a0 It\u2019s why people love to travel to Europe because\u00a0they don\u2019t have to worry about it when\u00a0they go out for dinner. Customers start\u00a0tipping out of shame instead of appreciation.
