Based on that, Natarajan says, there was a flurry of interest in \u201ccapturing that macronutrient in a pill to see if that similar efficacy could be achieved outside of food.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But efforts to bottle the benefits haven\u2019t panned out. While some studies show possible advantages, many large randomized controlled trials failed to show clear cardiovascular benefits from fish oil supplements, Natarajan says.<\/p>\n<p>At the same time, concerns emerged as studies linked high doses of fish oil to an increased risk of irregular heart rhythm. A different privacy policy and terms of service will apply.&#039;);return false;\" title=\"cholesterol medications\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">high triglyceride<\/a> levels, who may be prescribed a type of highly purified, prescription-grade fish oil.<\/p>\n<p>            <b>Do fish oil supplements support brain health?<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Plenty of research shows that eating fish can <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aarp.org\/health\/healthy-living\/improving-memory-smart-guide\/\" data-overlay-msg=\"AARP.Everywhere.LeavingModal.drawOverlay(this,&#039;&#039;,\/content\/dam\/content-fragments\/aarp-org\/en\/article\/health\/drugs-supplements\/2025\/fish-oil-supplements.html,&#039;&#039;,&#039;You are now leaving AARP.org and going to a website that is not operated by AARP. But when it comes to fish oil supplements, the evidence is less clear, says Lynne Shinto, M.D., professor of neurology at Oregon Health &amp; Science University.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>So far, most randomized controlled trials have found no brain benefits among people who take fish oil capsules, she says, but more research is needed.<\/p>\n<p>Still, some recent findings are promising. However, the fish oil supplementation in that study was based on patient reporting, which limits the study\u2019s reliability compared to randomized controlled trials, Shinto says.<\/p>\n<p>Shinto\u2019s own research offers new insight into who might benefit most from supplements. In a 2024 randomized clinical trial published in JAMA Network Open, she followed about 100 older adults over age 74 with no signs of dementia for three years. A different privacy policy and terms of service will apply.&#039;);return false;\" data-displayoverlay=\"displayOverlay\" title=\"fish oil and brain\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/jamanetwork.com\/journals\/jamanetworkopen\/fullarticle\/2821809\" target=\"_blank\">there wasn\u2019t a significant benefit<\/a> from taking over-the-counter fish oil supplements.<\/p>\n<p>But for those carrying the APOE4 gene, a genetic marker linked to higher Alzheimer\u2019s risk, the supplements appeared to slow brain cell degeneration.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe APOE4 people who got the fish oil had better brain connectivity over three years compared to those who were on placebo,\u201d Shinto explains. \u201cIt was a significant finding.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While Shinto is planning a larger clinical trial to confirm the results, she emphasizes that her research also showed that over-the-counter dosages of fish oil are safe and have few side effects.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe takeaway is, we can\u2019t say for sure that it\u2019s going to help \u2026 but it certainly seems safe enough that you could take it,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Do fish oil supplements boost heart health?
