The roof of a suburban apartment building was torn to pieces by severe thunderstorms storms<\/a> that swept through the Chicago area Saturday afternoon. <\/p>\n

Residents of an apartment building in suburban Mount Prospect, located on the 700 block of West Huntington Commons Road, were evacuated after the building’s roof was ripped to shreds by severe storms.<\/p>\n

Pipes in the building burst as the roof was torn away, sending water gushing into the building, a resident said.<\/p>\n

“Water was just pouring down the ceiling in all the hallways,” said Kamil Seremac, a resident of the building. “It was scary.” <\/p>\n

Several vehicles parked near the building were crushed by falling debris, including Seremac’s van.<\/p>\n

Dozens of residents of the building were evacuated. <\/p>\n

The apartment building is uninhabitable, though police say no one was injured. <\/p>\n

There are several apartment buildings in the area, with at least one blocked off with police tape, according to NBC Chicago reporters at the scene. <\/p>\n

A series of severe thunderstorms moved across the Chicago area Saturday afternoon, causing thousands of power outages and damage throughout the region.<\/p>\n

Winds in Cook County were reached up to 60 miles per hour, according to the National Weather Service.<\/p>\n

More than 2,000 people in the Mount Prospect Area are without power following the severe storms, according to ComEd. <\/p>\n
