{"id":152414,"date":"2025-08-17T06:02:25","date_gmt":"2025-08-17T06:02:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/152414\/"},"modified":"2025-08-17T06:02:25","modified_gmt":"2025-08-17T06:02:25","slug":"nurse-practitioner-convicted-of-12-million-medicare-scam-involving-cancer-genetic-tests-globe-magazine","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/152414\/","title":{"rendered":"Nurse Practitioner Convicted of $12 Million Medicare Scam Involving Cancer Genetic Tests \u2013 Globe Magazine"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-7901\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/Crime-Medicare-fraud-Crime-Medicare-fraud-Scharmaine-Lawson-Baker-1-FACEBOOK.jpg_master.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1440\" height=\"1800\"  \/> Facebook\/Scharmaine Lawson Baker<\/p>\n<p>New Orleans nurse practitioner <strong>Scharmaine Lawson Baker<\/strong> was convicted for her role in a $12.1 million Medicare swindle involving cancer genetic tests ordered for hundreds of patients who she never met or examined, federal officials say.<\/p>\n<p>According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.justice.gov\/opa\/pr\/louisiana-nurse-practitioner-convicted-12m-medicare-fraud-scheme\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ)<\/a>, Baker, 58, was found guilty of six counts of health care fraud after falsely diagnosing individuals to justify unnecessary screenings \u2014 and even impossibly claimed that male patients had cervical cancer.<\/p>\n<p>Authorities say that from 2018 to 2019, the greedy gal worked as an independent contractor for a company that claimed to provide telehealth services \u2014 and signed a slew of orders for pricey testing after phone calls with patients that often lasted under 60 seconds.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-7902\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/Crime-Medicare-fraud-Crime-Medicare-fraud-GettyImages-2222164945.jpg_master-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"2560\" height=\"1707\"  \/>DOJ Criminal Division Head Matthew R. Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>The DOJ also alleges that she incorrectly informed clients they were being screened for cancer at no cost \u2014 even though the tests did not actually identify any existing disease.<\/p>\n<p>The feds say the labs involved received over $1.5 million in reimbursements for the bogus orders \u2014 and charge that Baker accepted kickbacks and bribes from the telehealth company that she also did not disclose in a subsequent bankruptcy filing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLawson Baker shamelessly exploited her medical license and the trust of vulnerable patients to enrich herself,\u201d says Acting Assistant Attorney General <strong>Matthew R.
