{"id":153541,"date":"2025-08-17T16:34:10","date_gmt":"2025-08-17T16:34:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/153541\/"},"modified":"2025-08-17T16:34:10","modified_gmt":"2025-08-17T16:34:10","slug":"storm-knocks-out-power-trees-in-mchenry-county-saturday-shaw-local","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/153541\/","title":{"rendered":"Storm knocks out power, trees in McHenry County Saturday \u2013 Shaw Local"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-xb1qmn-0 gBIiEi body-paragraph\">A strong thunderstorm rolled through McHenry County about 4 p.m. Saturday, downing trees, knocking out power and flooding some streets.<\/p>\n<p class=\"interstitial-link block-margin-bottom\">[\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.shawlocal.com\/northwest-herald\/2025\/08\/17\/thousands-still-without-power-in-mchenry-county-as-storm-cleanup-continue-sunday\/?mrfhud=true\" aria-label=\"Open related story\" class=\"default__StyledLink-sc-xb1qmn-1 dRAQBW\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">UPDATE: Thousands still without power Sunday as cleanup begins<\/a>\u00a0]<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-xb1qmn-0 gBIiEi body-paragraph\">According to ComEd\u2019s online outage map, power was out from Freeport to Joliet on Saturday after the storm passed through northern Illinois.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-xb1qmn-0 gBIiEi body-paragraph\">The storm hit McHenry County hard, with trees and branches knocked down across roads and power lines down from Fox River Grove to Woodstock.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-xb1qmn-0 gBIiEi body-paragraph\">The village of Cary told residents via its Facebook page that it was activating additional resources \u201cto ensure the safe recovery from tonight\u2019s weather event.\u201d Residents were asked to report issues that were not life-threatening to the nonemergency line, 847-639-2341, but to report more dire, life-threatening emergencies by calling 911.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-xb1qmn-0 gBIiEi body-paragraph\">Algonquin residents were asked to avoid the areas affected by downed trees and branches, and to not attempt to move large branches or power lines on their own. <\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-xb1qmn-0 gBIiEi body-paragraph\">On the village Facebook page, residents were asked to report blocked roads and other hazardous conditions at the nonemergency number, 847-658-4531, or to report online at algonquin.org\/fixit.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ImageMetadata__MetadataParagraph-sc-1gn0vty-0 ijEZZk image-metadata\">This tree in the Northwest Herald parking lot on Route 31 in Crystal Lake was one of the victims of the storm that rolled through McHenry County at about 4 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 16, 2025. (Janelle Walker)<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-xb1qmn-0 gBIiEi body-paragraph\">The National Weather Service in Romeoville said they were hoping to hear reports from McHenry County, as it did not have a lot of details on the thunderstorm, meteorologist Gino Izzi said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-xb1qmn-0 gBIiEi body-paragraph\">\u201cThe storm went through with spots of damage and strong winds, but we do not have a lot of details,\u201d Izzi said. \u201cThese thunderstorms were producing damaging, straight-line winds but there was nothing tornadic up there\u201d in McHenry County, he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-xb1qmn-0 gBIiEi body-paragraph\">\u201cAnother line is moving in now, but it doesn\u2019t look as bad. There are gusty winds, but it does not look as severe as the line earlier,\u201d Izzi said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-xb1qmn-0 gBIiEi body-paragraph\">On Algonquin Road in Fox River Grove and the Trout Valley area, an excavator was pushing fallen trees and branches off the road to allow traffic through. The road was blocked heading toward Route 14 and toward River Drive North in Algonquin.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-xb1qmn-0 gBIiEi body-paragraph\">The ComEd online outage map showed 721 active power outages, affecting 74,000 customers, as of 6:50 p.m.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-xb1qmn-0 gBIiEi body-paragraph\">Winds up to 70 mph hit northern Illinois on Saturday, and about 76,000 customers were without power as of 9 p.m., Lauren Huffman, senior communications manager for ComEd, wrote in an email to the Northwest Herald.
