Los Angeles City Hall will be lit in red and white Sunday evening to celebrate the 80th anniversary of Indonesia\u2019s declaration of independence from the Dutch Empire, City Councilwoman Heather Hutt announced.<\/p>\n
It will also be a tribute to the \u201crich cultural contributions of the Indonesian American community in Los Angeles,\u201d she said. <\/p>\n
Indonesia\u2019s flag colors are red, symbolizing courage, and white, representing purity.<\/p>\n
\u201cIn Los Angeles, we are privileged to have a thriving Indonesian community whose contributions enrich the cultural, economic, and social fabric of our city,\u201d Hutt said. \u201cFrom small businesses to the arts, from education to civic engagement, Indonesian Americans help make Los Angeles stronger and more diverse.\u201d<\/p>\n
Mayor Karen Bass said the special lights will also serve as a reminder of the city\u2019s deep commitment to recognizing and embracing all cultures.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe City of Los Angeles is proud to join the Indonesian American community in celebrating Indonesian Independence Day,\u201d Bass said. \u201cThe lighting of City Hall in red and white stands as a tribute of recognition and respect for the heritage, resilience, and contributions of the Indonesian American community. We honor the richness of Indonesia\u2019s culture and the vibrant role this community plays in shaping a stronger, more inclusive Los Angeles.\u201d<\/p>\n
More than 14,000 Indonesian Americans live in Los Angeles, according to the Pew Research Center \u2014 the most of any U.S. city.<\/p>\n
