File photo by Ken Stone<\/p>\n<p>Animal rights advocates will protest in front of a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.traderjoes.com\/home\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Trader Joe\u2019s<\/a> in Pacific Beach Sunday afternoon to demand that the grocery chain stop purchasing chickens from Petaluma Poultry.<\/p>\n<p>Sunday\u2019s protest was set to begin at 4:30 p.m. at 1640 Garnet Avenue. <\/p>\n<p>It is one of many that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.directactioneverywhere.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Direct Action Everywhere<\/a> is holding over the weekend at Trader Joe\u2019s in multiple states.<\/p>\n<p>On Saturday, the group staged a demonstration in front of a Trader Joe\u2019s in Encino, playing audio of chickens screaming during slaughter, holding signs and banners and engaged shoppers. <\/p>\n<p>They also gathered near the home of Trader Joe\u2019s chief executive officer Bryan Palbaum, who lives nearby.<\/p>\n<p>DxE accuses <a href=\"https:\/\/www.petalumapoultry.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Petaluma Poultry<\/a>, a subsidiary of poultry giant <a href=\"https:\/\/www.perduefarms.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Perdue Foods<\/a>, of extreme animal cruelty, including boiling birds alive and leaving them without food or water.<\/p>\n<p>DxE has been lobbying Trader Joe\u2019s to sever ties with the poultry company for years, and its investigators say they\u2019ve documented multiple violations of California\u2019s animal cruelty laws at Petaluma farms since 2018. DxE also alleges that conditions at the slaughterhouse pose a health risks to humans.<\/p>\n<p>Neither Trader Joe\u2019s nor Petaluma Poultry responded to a request for comment, but on its website, Petaluma Poultry says it is \u201cdedicated to sustainable farming practices to ensure animal welfare and environmental stewardship and are validated by a 3rd-party audit including the Global Animal Partnership.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Trader Joe\u2019s, which is headquartered in Monrovia, had sought to ban protests inside and outside its 205 California stores, but a judge recently denied the bid to ban protests outside the stores.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"A Trader Joe\u2019s on a rainy day.
