Chris Carpenter, co-owner of Dallas restaurant Hendy\u2019s on Henderson<\/a>, died on Aug. 10, 2025, after spending the prior evening at the bustling bar.<\/p>\n

Hendy\u2019s was open barely a month when Carpenter died.<\/p>\n

Carpenter was 41 years old \u2014 but 25 at heart, his friends would say. His cause of death is unknown. Friends said it came as a shock.<\/p>\n

He loved surfing, traveling, skateboarding and going to the gym. He often sported a new hairstyle, his sisters said. <\/p>\n

Friend and fellow bar operator Andrew Young called him a \u201chigh risk, high reward\u201d person who was a \u201cmeticulous manager\u201d with a magnetic personality.<\/p>\n

Carpenter was born and raised in Maui, where he learned to surf and bodyboard. He graduated from Lahainaluna High School and went to motorcycle mechanics school. He eventually moved to Arizona to work in the nightlife industry in Scottsdale, where he worked as a barback, bar manager, general manager and event promoter.<\/p>\n

Eric Ferrone said his friend \u201cCarp\u201d had a \u201c24-hour personality.\u201d<\/p>\n

Colleague and friend Dan Young called him \u201ca pillar of our industry.\u201d <\/p>\n

At first, he seemed \u201cjacked [and] tatted up.\u201d But, Young also found him to be a connector and a mentor. <\/p>\n

Carpenter was a natural leader when given a management role, several said.<\/p>\n

The evening before Chris Carpenter died, he was working the room at Hendy’s on Henderson \u2014 delivering drinks and welcoming customers to the new bar.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe lived fully, loved deeply and led with a rare combination of passion and generosity,\u201d said Cote Bona, one of his best friends and a business partner in Hendy\u2019s.<\/p>\n

\u201cHis laugh could fill a room, his ideas could change its course, and his belief in people made you believe in yourself.\u201d<\/p>\n

Carpenter and Bona moved across the United States to open Bottled Blonde bars in several cities, including Miami and Dallas. <\/p>\n

The two partnered with Dallas restaurateurs Brandon Hays and Phil Schanbaum (High Fives, Burger Schmurger, the coming-soon Boogie\u2019s<\/a> and more) to open Hendy\u2019s on Henderson, replacing pizza joint Sfuzzi<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Hays enjoyed Carpenter\u2019s intensity.<\/p>\n

\u201cFun conversations about drink and food programs were met with the same intensity as the way he wanted service to be handled,\u201d Hays said. Running Hendy\u2019s was natural to Carpenter, he said.<\/p>\n

Adam Evers, a friend, said Carpenter was \u201cgenuine, driven and full of heart, with a personality larger than life.\u201d<\/p>\n

Said Schanbaum: \u201cWe will make him proud at Hendy\u2019s.\u201d<\/p>\n

Carpenter is survived by his parents, stepparents and sisters.<\/p>\n

Friends and family hosted a celebration of life for Carpenter at Hendy\u2019s in Dallas on Aug. 14, 2025.
