I\u2019m a man of God, just as Mamdani says he\u2019s a Muslim. I don\u2019t know where in his Quran it states that it\u2019s okay for a woman to be on the streets selling their body,\u201d Hizzoner told reporters Sunday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know what Quran he is reading. NY Post\/Steven Vago<\/p>\n<p>Islam \u2013 Mamdani\u2019s religion \u2013 prohibits prostitution under its laws of morality.<\/p>\n<p>Adams slammed the Democratic mayoral nominee after <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/08\/16\/us-news\/nyc-could-become-a-tourism-hotspot-for-sex-if-socialist-zohran-mamdani-becomes-mayor-critics-warn-shocks-the-conscience\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">The Post cast the spotlight on Mamdani\u2019s past push<\/a> to change the statute that makes it a crime for people to sell their bodies for sex in New York.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s an issue Mamdani has taken up multiple times since he ran for state assembly in 2020 and has continually supported since \u2014 but the 33-year-old Socialist has been largely mum on the issue since he started his run for mayor.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s left some critics worried Mamdani might make a sudden push for legal prostitution if he makes it into office in the fall.<\/p>\n<p>And Adams said it would be a shame if he does \u2013 arguing Mamdani is \u201clost\u201d on the harsh realities of sex work and the damaging crime it attracts.<\/p>\n<p>A woman suspected of being a prostitute on Roosevelt Avenue in Queens. NY Post<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think he\u2019s lost on the fact that sex trafficking is very much part of prostitution,\u201d Adams said. \u201cWe are trying to bring down crime and he is talking about legalizing sex work.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re not doing any service to a woman who is on the street who is forced to sell her body for whatever reason,\u201d he added. \u201cNo one should be on our streets selling their bodies. No one.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Supporters of legalized sex work often argue that prostitutes would be less vulnerable to violence from clients, pimps, and even law enforcement.<\/p>\n<p>Frontrunner candidate Zohran Mamdani has been quiet on the issue of prostitution during his mayoral campaign. Michael Nigro<\/p>\n<p>But some studies of places where it has been legalized \u2013 like Nevada and some European countries \u2013 have found human trafficking spikes to fulfill the demand for sex workers, as other forms of organized crime fester around the industry.<\/p>\n<p>Mamdani has co-sponsored several bills that would legalize prostitution across New York state while serving as a Queens assemblyman.<\/p>\n<p>And while he would still need to go through the state legislature to pass a law, if elected mayor, he would hold a key platform to advocate for the change and also to deprioritize prostitution enforcement by the NYPD.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\tStart your day with all you need to know\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p class=\"inline-module__cta\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\tMorning Report delivers the latest news, videos, photos and more.\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\tThanks for signing up!\n\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>Some have even feared the Big Apple could become a hub for sex tourism to rival Amsterdam\u2019s famous Red Light District if Mamdani has his way.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s something Mayor Adams \u2013 who is running for reelection against Mamdani as an independent \u2013 says he doesn\u2019t want.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf that is his belief, it is a danger for our city,\u201d Adams said.\u00a0\u201cOur city needs to be a safe city.
