Garmin watches can lock with a passcode, but this feature isn’t on by default. Read on to find out how to turn this feature on, so you can lock your data when your watch isn\u2019t on your wrist. Passcodes are available on a growing list of Garmin watches, including the most recent models of Enduro, Fenix, Forerunner, Lily, Tactix, Venu, and Vivoactive. You can see an example above on the Forerunner 570<\/a>.<\/p>\n When you have the device passcode enabled, you will be asked to enter the passcode whenever you put your watch on. As long as you keep the watch on your wrist, you won’t need to enter it again. But if you take the watch off and somebody else picks it up, they won’t be able to do much without entering the code\u2014they can see the time, and that’s about it. <\/p>\n How the Garmin device passcode works<\/p>\n The device passcode is a relatively new feature, added in January 2025. Before that, passcodes were only available for the Garmin Pay wallet feature. Now, you can decide whether you want to lock just the wallet, or the whole watch.<\/p>\n With the wallet-only passcode, you set up a passcode when you are first enabling the Garmin Pay feature. Then, when you tap your watch to use Garmin Pay at a store checkout, you\u2019ll have to enter a four-digit code.\u00a0<\/p>\n But you can also lock your entire watch, not just the wallet. Here\u2019s how to turn it on:\u00a0<\/p>\n Go into your Settings<\/strong> menu on the watch.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n Select System<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/li>\n Under Passcode<\/strong>, you can set a passcode if you don’t have one already. <\/p>\n<\/li>\n Once you’ve set a passcode, you\u2019ll have the option for \u201cOn\u201d or \u201cWallet only.\u201d Select \u201cOn\u201d if you want to have to enter the passcode each time you put your watch on.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n If you haven’t set up Garmin Pay, your passcode options will just be “On” or “Off.”<\/p>\n What you can and can\u2019t do with a Garmin passcode<\/p>\n With the passcode enabled, you\u2019ll have to punch in your code when you put your watch on, but otherwise things will work as usual\u2014for you.\u00a0<\/p>\n For someone who doesn\u2019t know the code, they can pick up the watch and look at it, but most things beyond the watch face will be locked behind the passcode. To a stranger who doesn\u2019t know the code, here\u2019s what is still available:<\/p>\n The watch face is visible as usual<\/p>\n<\/li>\n The light button works to turn the watch face or light on and off<\/p>\n<\/li>\n If an activity was running when you took the watch off, it will remain running<\/p>\n<\/li>\n You can still answer a phone call<\/p>\n<\/li>\n The flashlight and emergency assistance shortcuts still work<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n And here is what is not:\u00a0<\/p>\n What do you think so far?<\/p>\n The glances (data you reach by swiping up or scrolling down from the watch face) are locked<\/p>\n<\/li>\n The settings menu is locked<\/p>\n<\/li>\n The activity menu is locked, so you can\u2019t start a new activity<\/p>\n<\/li>\n The shortcuts menu (hold the top left button on a Forerunner) only contains five options: power off, lock device, turn the touchscreen on or off, flashlight, and emergency assistance.\u00a0(This is what I see on the Forerunner 265S and 570; specifics may vary by watch.)<\/p>\n<\/li>\n Everything else that might be on that menu, like your wallet, timers, find my phone, etc.\u2014all are missing.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n If you have previously set a passcode and turned it off, you will need to enter your passcode to turn the passcode on again, which helpfully confirms that you still remember what it is and won’t lock yourself out. <\/p>\n Which Garmin watches have the device passcode feature?<\/p>\n Garmin lists<\/a> these watches as passcode-capable, so long as you have the most recent software update installed, and you have the most recent version of the Garmin Connect app:\u00a0<\/p>\n Enduro 3<\/p>\n<\/li>\n Fenix 8 (AMOLED or Solar) and Fenix E<\/p>\n<\/li>\n Forerunner 165, 255, 265, 955, and 965, and their variations (including S and Music), and the new 570 and 970.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n\n
