{"id":154728,"date":"2025-08-18T03:36:17","date_gmt":"2025-08-18T03:36:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/154728\/"},"modified":"2025-08-18T03:36:17","modified_gmt":"2025-08-18T03:36:17","slug":"francisco-alvarez-exits-mets-game-early-with-hand-injury","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/154728\/","title":{"rendered":"Francisco Alvarez exits Mets game early with hand injury"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. \u2014 The Mets and Francisco Alvarez got another injury scare Sunday night.<\/p>\n<p>The catcher was removed prior to the eighth inning after injuring his right thumb on a headfirst slide in the bottom of the seventh of a <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/08\/17\/sports\/mets-offense-busts-out-in-little-league-classic-win-over-mariners\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">7-3 win over Seattle in the Little League Classic<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Alvarez was checked out by trainers and initially remained in the game before he was replaced by Luis Torrens to start the eighth.<\/p>\n<p>Manager Carlos Mendoza said that he\u2019ll travel back to New York City for an MRI on the thumb Monday.<\/p>\n<p>Francisco Alvarez reacts after getting hurt on a slide into second base during the Mets\u2019 Aug. 17 game. Robert Sabo for the NY Post<\/p>\n<p>Alvarez\u2019s solid play since his recall from Triple-A Syracuse continued Sunday with a pair of doubles, but he\u2019s had issues with his hands already in his career.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this year, he suffered a left hamate fracture, and when he struggled on both sides of the plate when he recovered from that injury, he was sent down to the minors.<\/p>\n<p>Alvarez also underwent surgery on his left thumb last season.<\/p>\n<p>Francisco Alvarez reacts after getting injured during the Mets\u2019 Aug. 17 game against the Mariners. Robert Sabo for the NY Post<\/p>\n<p>He\u2019d impressed the Mets with both his production and work ethic after the demotion, and his play remained improved after his return to the majors.<\/p>\n<p>Alvarez entered Sunday on a 6-for-16 tear, with four extra-base hits, including three homers.<\/p>\n<p>Francisco Alvarez AP<\/p>\n<p>Then he doubled and scored in the second, singled and scored in the fifth and doubled again in the seventh.<\/p>\n<p>Nolan McLean\u2019s past few days began with him at Triple-A Syracuse before being called up <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/08\/16\/sports\/nolan-mcleans-impressive-mlb-debut-leaves-mets-wanting-more\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">to make his MLB debut with the Mets<\/a> on Saturday at Citi Field, then traveling with the team to the Little League Classic in his second day as a major leaguer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was a crazy turn of events for me,\u201d McLean said prior to the Mets facing the Mariners on Sunday night. \u201cFrom being in Rochester [with Syracuse] to Citi Field to now Williamsport, I kind of can\u2019t believe it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>McLean <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/08\/16\/sports\/nolan-mcleans-dazzling-debut-powers-mets-past-mariners\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">delivered a much-needed boost<\/a> to the underperforming Mets rotation with 5 \u00b9\/\u2083 scoreless innings in Saturday\u2019s win in Queens.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOnce I got out of the game and then when it was over, the Gatorade bath caught me off guard,\u201d McLean said. \u201cHearing the crowd was surreal for me. It was the biggest crowd I\u2019ve ever played in front of, so that was special.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>The 24-year-old allowed just two hits and four walks and struck out eight against the Mariners.<\/p>\n<p>He began the year with Double-A Binghamton before moving to Syracuse after five impressive outings, then put up a 2.78 ERA in 16 games (13 starts) at Triple-A before getting called up.<\/p>\n<p>Saturday\u2019s debut by McLean was highly anticipated, mostly due to how poorly much of the rest of the rotation has pitched lately, while McLean and Brandon Sproat \u2014 and more recently Jonah Tong at Triple-A \u2014 have impressed in the minors.<\/p>\n<p>Tylor Megill took an encouraging step to a return to the rotation in a rehab start Sunday with Double-A Binghamton, as the right-hander whiffed nine in 3 \u00b9\/\u2083 innings. <\/p>\n<p>He threw 55 pitches as he works his way back from an elbow strain that has sidelined him since mid-June.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\tDelivering insights on all things Amazin\u2019s\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p class=\"inline-module__cta\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\tSign up for Inside the Mets by Mike Puma, exclusively on Sports+\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\tThank you\n\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>Ryan Helsley, who\u2019d been scored upon in his previous four appearances (seven runs, five earned, in 2 \u00b9\/\u2083 innings), tossed a scoreless eighth inning. \u2026 The start of Sunday\u2019s game was delayed by rain. \u2026 Luisangel Acu\u00f1a served as the 27th man for the Mets.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. \u2014 The Mets and Francisco Alvarez got another injury scare Sunday night.
