JPMorgan CEO Jamie Dimon<\/strong> won\u2019t be making an endorsement in the NYC mayoral race, his spokesperson tells Vanity Fair. Although Dimon has said democratic socialist Zohran Mamdani<\/strong> is \u201cmore a Marxist than a socialist,\u201d and criticized Democrats for \u201cfalling all over themselves\u201d to support his policies\u2014which the banker has called<\/a> \u201cideological mush that means nothing in the real world\u201d\u2014he\u2019s not actually allowed to endorse a candidate because JPMorgan is \u201cinvolved in municipal underwriting,\u201d the spokesperson says. Billionaire Bill Ackman<\/strong> has ditched Andrew Cuomo<\/strong> for Eric Adams,<\/strong> and Balthazar owner Keith McNally<\/strong> has said he believes Mamdani \u201cis fantastic,\u201d particularly because his \u201caffluent, paranoid friends [claim] Mamdani’s dangerous.\u201d<\/p>\n

Yes, to quote a famous New Yorker<\/a>, the New York City mayor\u2019s race has everything. Sitting mayor Eric Adams, who was indicted<\/a> on a whole bunch of corruption charges that were later disappeared<\/a> by the president of the United States. Disgraced ex-governor Andrew Cuomo, who was the early favorite<\/a> when he jumped into the race and then basically didn\u2019t campaign<\/a>, resulting in a resounding loss<\/a>. Two-time Republican nominee Curtis Sliwa,<\/strong> the (usually<\/a>) beret-wearing Guardian Angels founder who was once the subject of an assassination attempt by the mafia<\/a>, and lives with 16 cats<\/a>. Previously little-known democratic socialist Zohran Mamdani, who moved ahead<\/a> of Cuomo with two weeks till the June primary, and clinched the nomination by a whopping 12 points, leading to a high-net-worth panic<\/a>.<\/p>\n

In another universe, Mamdani\u2019s win would mean a general election face-off with Sliwa, which would probably not be much of a race at all. But Cuomo, now an independent candidate, is still running<\/a>. Adams, who dropped out of the primary, is running as an independent too. Both men think the other should get lost<\/a>. An adviser to Adams recently warned<\/a> Cuomo donors that giving him money again would be a \u201csuicide mission.\u201d Cuomo has been deploying a new strategy on social media that, as one Brooklyn councilman put it<\/a> to The New York Times, has been \u201chard to watch.\u201d Cuomo has also reportedly<\/a> discussed the race with Donald Trump,<\/strong> which both men deny. Curtis Sliwa has been taking his beret off<\/a>. Mamdani has a commanding lead in the polls<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile some of the most powerful people in New York and Democratic politics have chosen not to endorse a candidate. Remaining mum\u2014so far\u2014are governor Kathy Hochul,<\/strong> Senate minority leader Chuck Schumer,<\/strong> and House minority leader Hakeem Jeffries.<\/strong> Senator Cory Booker<\/strong>\u2014who has made<\/a> endorsements<\/a> in out-of-state elections in the past\u2014cited the fact that he lives across the river in explaining why he won\u2019t weigh in on the race, saying<\/a>, \u201cNew York City, I love you. You\u2019re my neighbor. You\u2019re about 10 miles from where I live. You guys figure out your elections. I\u2019m going to focus on mine.\u201d<\/p>\n

That\u2019s not to say that endorsements haven\u2019t been made. Indeed, a cross section of prominent individuals in politics, business, arts, and entertainment have thrown their support to the candidates. Many wealthy New Yorkers\u2014particularly those in real estate\u2014have lined up to back Adams, whom they see as their only hope against Mamdani\u2019s proposals for rent freezes and tax hikes. Some are sticking it out with Cuomo. Mamdani\u2014who is attempting to win over his billionaire critics<\/a>\u2014has clinched the most high-profile political endorsements, and a whole bunch of ones from the entertainment world too. Sliwa has\u2026a lot fewer public backers.<\/p>\n

From Democratic Party leaders to a former New York governor, from a billionaire hedge fund manager to a Gilded Age star, from an ex-president to a Trump nemesis, here are some of the biggest names who\u2019ve gone to bat for their would-be mayor of choice.<\/p>\n

ZOHRAN MAMDANI<\/p>\n

Bradley Tusk<\/strong> (venture capitalist and political strategist): Tusk, whose firm worked on Cuomo\u2019s campaign, wrote<\/a> in an op-ed following the primary: \u201cIf you love New York City and want to see it thrive, even if Mamdani\u2019s views and politics are not your own (they\u2019re certainly not mine), let\u2019s do what we can to help him succeed.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mark Gorton<\/strong> (investor): Following Mamdani\u2019s primary win, Gorton\u2014a major donor to Cuomo\u2019s super PAC\u2014told<\/a> The New York Times he was likely to back Mamdani due to the support the candidate received from city comptroller Brad Lander.<\/strong> \u201cI feel like people misunderstood my $250,000 for Cuomo for real enthusiasm,\u201d Gorton told the outlet. \u201cIt was basically, \u2018Oh, looks like Cuomo is coming back. We don\u2019t want to be shut out. Let\u2019s try and get on his good side.\u2019\u201d Gorton later scoffed at the idea that billionaires would leave the city should the Democratic nominee clinch the general election. \u201cNew York is a pretty special place.
