\n\tSir Ian McKellen<\/a> may not be officially attached to Andy Serkis<\/a>\u2019 return to Middle-earth, but it has not stopped the British thespian from teasing details about the new Lord of the Rings movies.<\/p>\n

\n\tMcKellen was on stage at a fan event in London over the weekend, flanked by his Fellowship comrades, including Elijah Wood<\/a> (Frodo Baggins) and Sean Astin (Samwise Gamgee). Billy Boyd and Dominic Monaghan were also present.<\/p>\n

\n\tPacing the stage, McKellen revealed that Gandalf and Frodo will feature in Serkis-directed The Lord of the Rings<\/a>: The Hunt for Gollum (working title), with the first of two films slated for a December 17, 2027, theatrical release by Warner Bros. Pictures. McKellen also disclosed when cameras will get rolling.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI hear there\u2019s going to be another movie set in Middle-earth, and it\u2019s going to start filming in May. It\u2019s going to be directed by Gollum, and it\u2019s all about Gollum,\u201d he told the For The Love Of Fantasy event, per a video.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI\u2019ll tell you two secrets about the casting: There\u2019s a character in the movie called Frodo, and there\u2019s a character in the movie called Gandalf,\u201d he continued, knowingly adding: \u201cApart from that, my lips are sealed.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tMcKellen did not say whether he and Wood will reprise their roles, but the actor has previously said that he hoped to put back on his wizard\u2019s hat<\/a>. \u201cEnthusiasm for The Lord of the Rings shows no sign of abating \u2026 I can\u2019t tell you any more than that. I\u2019ve just been told there are going to be more films and Gandalf will be involved and they hope that I\u2019ll be playing him,\u201d he said last year.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe Oscar-winning team behind\u00a0The\u00a0Lord of the Rings\u00a0and\u00a0The Hobbit\u00a0trilogies\u00a0\u2014 Peter Jackson, Fran Walsh, and Philippa Boyens\u00a0\u2014 is reuniting to produce two new films from J.R.R. Tolkien\u2019s Middle-earth for Warner Bros. Pictures and New Line Cinema.\u00a0Zane Weiner is also producing.\u00a0Walsh and Boyens are writing the screenplay, along with Phoebe Gittins and Arty Papageorgiou.<\/p>\n
