The release of homicide victims\u2019 names is delayed by two weeks to allow time for the victims\u2019 families to be notified of a death by Chicago police.<\/p>\n<p>The homicide figures do not include killings that occurred in self-defense or in other circumstances not measured in Chicago police statistics. Homicide data from the Illinois State Police, which patrols the city\u2019s expressways, also is not included here.<\/p>\n<p>After a two-year spike during the pandemic and national outrage over police accountability, Chicago <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/news\/criminal-justice\/ct-chicago-police-end-of-year-statistics-20230101-csik4prl5nbwjg5sv4bw75xj3y-story.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">began to see a decline<\/a> in homicides in 2022. Homicide and nonfatal shooting totals <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/news\/criminal-justice\/ct-cpd-year-end-20240101-czl3beotkjbtrc42y3y5z2gzgq-story.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">fell again<\/a> in 2023, but the city was roiled by robbery and carjacking crews responsible for an overall uptick in violence. Then 2024 was the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2024\/12\/31\/as-2024-ends-johnson-and-snelling-again-point-to-drops-in-murders-shootings\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">third consecutive year<\/a> of decreasing homicides in Chicago.<\/p>\n<p>Data, which is updated on this page weekly, is through Aug. 16, 2025.<\/p>\n<p><b>The number of people slain so far in 2025: 254.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>That\u2019s 109 fewer people killed when compared with 2024.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Austin has recorded the most homicides so far in 2025: 33.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Where each homicide has occurred so far in 2025 (through Aug. 16)<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Chicago\u2019s homicide victims in 2025 are often young, Black and male.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Most homicide victims in Chicago died as the result of gunshot wounds.<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Sources: City of Chicago; Tribune reporting and archives<\/p>\n<p>Originally Published: August 18, 2025 at 8:30 AM CDT<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Information about homicides is released daily by the city of Chicago.
