WEST LOOP \u2014 Someone tried to bring a gun into Whitney Young Magnet High School on Monday, the first day of classes \u2014 but it was found and confiscated, officials said.<\/p>\n
Whitney Young Prinicpal Rickey Harris shared the news in an email to parents Monday morning. Harris said the gun was \u201cidentified during our standard entry screening,\u201d and it was \u201csecured\u201d and did not get further into the building.<\/p>\n
\u201cSafety is always my top priority, which is why I am writing to notify you of a situation that occurred earlier today,\u201d Harris said.<\/p>\n
No threats were made and no one was hurt, Harris wrote. Officials think there was no \u201cindicated threat toward anyone\u201d at the school, Harris wrote.<\/p>\n
No additional details were provided about who brought the gun to the school, citing \u201cprivacy reasons,\u201d but Harris said the situation was handled in accordance with Chicago Public Schools policies. Police will also be at the school to provide additional safety support during dismissal at 3:15 p.m. Monday.<\/p>\n
\u201cPlease know that we take situations like this seriously to ensure the safety of our school community. If your child voices any fears or concerns about this, please let us know so we can ensure their social-emotional needs are met,\u201d Harris said.<\/p>\n
CPS and Chicago police did not immediately respond to requests for comment. <\/p>\n
