The last person to have an outbreak-related case got a rash on July 1, according to state data.<\/p>\n<p>Two unvaccinated Texas children <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/measles-texas-rfk-death-vaccine-4e28b0edf5cab47980b40b2d47f0ec50\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">died of the virus<\/a> earlier this year and 100 people were hospitalized throughout the outbreak, which spread to 37 counties. The outbreak and was linked to outbreaks in <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/measles-texas-mexico-canada-ontario-0956a30c043b030ae79bc9f67c6ce89c\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Canada and Mexico<\/a> and <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/measles-kansas-ohio-mmr-vaccination-new-mexico-texas-569474272df9baaad1f6d73462ebe92a\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">other U.S. states<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>The U.S. is having <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/measles-outbreak-us-texas-mmr-vaccine-rfk-144ed193e13de675a750e52a505423e9\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">its worst year for measles<\/a> in more than three decades, as childhood vaccination rates against the virus <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/vaccination-rates-cdc-kindergarten-0d261546a130dc256735d7b1ff8c6a5f\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">decline<\/a> and more parents claim exemptions from school requirements. The U.S. has confirmed 1,356 cases as of Aug. 5, according U.S Centers for Disease Control and Prevention data. The nation\u2019s third measles death was <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/measles-death-new-mexico-texas-outbreak-b9aef6fdd51fbb4ebd1ce9ce28e33299\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">unvaccinated adult in New Mexico<\/a> who died in March.<\/p>\n<p>West Texas was the nation\u2019s measles epicenter for months. The virus started spreading there in <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/measles-outbreak-texas-rfk-vaccines-8cf4641b04731c713edb524ca943490c\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">close-knit, undervaccinated Mennonite communities<\/a> in Gaines County.<\/p>\n<p>Even with that outbreak over, Texas will likely see more cases as the virus spreads worldwide, officials said.<\/p>\n<p>At least 19 U.S. states have had measles outbreaks this year. Across the border in Chihuahua, Mexico, an outbreak <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/mexico-measles-vaccines-misinformation-mmr-mennonites-misinformation-ea6158b9a4d513b20f33cbc09034e5c2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">that started with a child who visited Gaines County<\/a> has ballooned to 3,854 cases and 13 deaths. Another in Ontario, Canada, started in October, sickening 2,362 so far and killing one. And 1,762 have been sickened in Alberta, Canada.<\/p>\n<p>Before the outbreak, most Texas doctors had never seen a measles case because of how uncommon it has become, said Texas Department of State Health Services Commissioner Jennifer Shuford.<\/p>\n<p>She credited testing, vaccination, monitoring and education with helping to end the outbreak.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI want to highlight the tireless work of the public health professionals across the state who contributed to the containment of one of the most contagious viruses,\u201d Shuford said in a statement. <\/p>\n<p>Measles causes a rash and respiratory symptoms that can lead to severe complications or death.
