Instead of bright explosions of life, these are dead and scorched, like black holes, and beneath them lies a man, or rather a rotting corpse. On the surface (and there is a lot on the surfaces of Kiefer\u2019s paintings; wheat, gold leaf, lead, an entire scythe) this looks like a slightly bleak situation.
