They\u2019ve lost seven of 10, including a three-game sweep by the Padres last week in San Francisco.<\/p>\n<p><strong>San Diego Padres (69-55, 2nd in NL West)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A three-game sweep at Dodger Stadium ruined a five-game winning streak that had carried the Padres to the top of the division. Now they are two games behind LA and a 1\u00bd games behind the Cubs, the NL\u2019s top wild-card team. The Padres are 7-2 so far against the Giants, clinching the season series.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Pitching matchups<\/p>\n<p><strong>Monday<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Giants LHP Robbie Ray (9-6, 2.98 ERA)\u00a0\u00a0 |\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong> An All-Star for a second time this year, Ray leads the NL with 56 walks but has 152 strikeouts in 148 innings in his first full year of action since 2022 (189 IP, 3.71 ERA). Ray is 1-1 with a 4.15 ERA, 13 strikeouts and two walks in 13 innings this year against the Padres. He took the loss in last week\u2019s meeting in San Francisco (6 IP, 4 ER).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Padres LHP Nestor Cortes (1-1, 5.71 ERA)\u00a0\u00a0 |\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong> He has a 2.89 ERA in 9\u2153 innings since returning from a flexor strain, with both starts coming after the trade from Milwaukee to San Diego. Cortes, like Ray, is making a second straight start against an opponent as he struck out six against one walk while allowing a run in 4\u2154 innings last week in San Francisco.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Tuesday<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Giants RHP Kai-Wei Teng (1-2, 9.90 ERA)\u00a0\u00a0 |\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong> The 26-year-old rookie was knocked around for seven runs\u2014six earned\u2014in 1\u2154 innings by the Padres last week in San Francisco. He has struck out eight and walked eight in 10 innings since joining the big-league team. The Padres worked four of those walks last week.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Padres RHP Nick Pivetta (12-4, 2.87 ERA)\u00a0\u00a0 |\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong> He matched up with Teng last week, striking out five over 6\u2154 innings of one-run ball. Pivetta scattered four hits and a walk in the start. He had allowed eight runs in 11\u2153 innings in two previous starts against the Giants. Pivetta has a 2.41 ERA in 13 starts at Petco this season.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Wednesday<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Giants RHP Landen Roupp (7-6, 3.45 ERA)\u00a0\u00a0 |\u00a0<\/strong>\u00a0 He was sidelined for about three weeks with elbow trouble before returning to the Giants\u2019 rotation on Friday, allowing five runs in three innings in a no-decision. Roupp has a 1.93 ERA in 18\u2154 career innings against the Padres, but is 0-1 with a 3.38 ERA in two starts (10\u2154 IP) this season.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Padres TBA\u00a0\u00a0 |\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong> With <strong>Michael King<\/strong> on the injured list and <strong>Randy V\u00e1squez<\/strong> optioned out after bulk relief work on Friday, the Padres will likely make a move for this spot. LHP <strong>JP Sears<\/strong> (7-10, 5.12 ERA) had been scheduled to start Sunday for Triple-A El Paso, but he did not make the start. He allowed five runs in five innings in his only start after the trade deadline before he was optioned to the minors.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Thursday<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Giants RHP Justin Verlander (1-9, 4.23 ERA)\u00a0\u00a0 |\u00a0<\/strong>\u00a0 The three-time Cy Young winner and future Hall-of-Famer is making his first start against the Padres since 2023 (6 IP, 2 ER) and just his fourth overall (2.95 ERA, 18 \u2153 IP). The 42-year-old struck out eight over seven shutout innings on Saturday in which he allowed just two hits. He has a 2.00 ERA over his last five starts.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Padres RHP Dylan Cease (5-11, 4.61 ERA)\u00a0\u00a0 |\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong> He looked like he\u2019d turned a corner (1.64 ERA, 16 strikeouts, 11 IP) when he walked a season-high six batters in 3\u2153 innings in Saturday\u2019s loss at Dodger Stadium. Cease has a 1.16 ERA in five wins, a 3.80 ERA in nine no-decisions and a 7.29 ERA in his 11 losses. The lineup is also without OF <strong>Jerar Encarnacion<\/strong> (hamstring) and C <strong>Tom Murphy<\/strong> (back), while LHP<strong> Erik Miller<\/strong> (elbow) is missing from the bullpen.<\/p>\n<p><strong>San Diego:<\/strong> OF<strong> Jackson Merrill<\/strong> was pulled from Sunday\u2019s game with ankle discomfort. He rolled his left ankle on Friday and played on Saturday before Sunday\u2019s exit. Merrill is day-to-day.
