{"id":156710,"date":"2025-08-18T21:25:11","date_gmt":"2025-08-18T21:25:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/156710\/"},"modified":"2025-08-18T21:25:11","modified_gmt":"2025-08-18T21:25:11","slug":"matt-giordano-sworn-in-as-phoenix-police-department-chief-phoenix","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/156710\/","title":{"rendered":"Matt Giordano Sworn In as Phoenix Police Department Chief | Phoenix"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Matt Giordano, a former Phoenix Police commander and most recently executive director of the Arizona Peace Officer Standards and Training Board (AZPOST), has been sworn in as the new Chief of the Phoenix Police Department, city officials announced.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMatt Giordano is a respected leader with deep knowledge of policing in Phoenix,\u201d said City Manager Jeff Barton. \u201cHe has earned a reputation for integrity, accountability and building trust.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Giordano began his law enforcement career with the Phoenix Police Department, rising to the rank of commander before serving as executive chief at the Maricopa County Sheriff\u2019s Office. Most recently, he led the state agency responsible for police training and certification.<\/p>\n<p>Mayor Kate Gallego called his appointment a strong step forward. \u201cHe has the skills and experience to lead our great department,\u201d Gallego said. \u201cI look forward to working with him to keep our city safe and continue the reforms instituted by the City Council.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Giordano said he was honored to return to the department where he started. \u201cI\u2019m committed to strengthening trust, deepening partnerships and serving all communities across Phoenix,\u201d he noted at his swearing-in ceremony.<\/p>\n<p>His selection followed a national search that included public forums and community engagement. Giordano was one of three finalists, along with Malik Aziz of Prince George\u2019s County, Maryland, and Mirtha V. Ramos of DeKalb County, Georgia.<\/p>\n<p>Community leaders praised the decision. Longtime Block Watch leader Dennis Eckerd said Giordano \u201cunderstands the need for change and the importance of collaboration.\u201d Ruben Alvarez, CEO of the Latino Leaders Network, called him \u201ccommitted to transparency, accountability and engagement with all of Phoenix\u2019s diverse communities.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Vice Mayor Ann O\u2019Brien said Giordano \u201ctruly understands the issues Phoenix faces,\u201d citing his leadership at Phoenix PD, MCSO, and AZPOST. Councilman Kevin Robinson noted Giordano\u2019s ethics and communication skills, while Councilwoman Kesha Hodge Washington said the hire \u201crepresents a collaborative commitment to thoughtful, community-centered reform.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Giordano officially assumed command in mid-August and held his first press conference on Aug. 13, outlining priorities that include building community trust, supporting officers, and increasing transparency.
