The Beatles<\/a>: Get Back. This latest nomination is both affirming and surprising, Martin tells THR, given that it\u2019s one of the most technically difficult archival Beatles projects he\u2019s taken on to date.<\/p>\n\n\t\u201cThe material we had, as far as audio quality goes, was so bad, and we had to do so much work to make it listenable,\u201d he says. \u201cThe fact that it\u2019s being recognized at all is a surprising and a massive honor.\u201d<\/p>\n
\n\tThe same machine-assisted-learning tech that powered Peter Jackson\u2019s Get Back and \u201cNow and Then\u201d went into Beatles \u201964, with Martin pulling 60-year-old live recordings from the earlier days of Beatlemania and meticulously extracting individual stems of Ringo Starr\u2019s drums or John Lennon\u2019s vocals and enhancing them while looking to keep their authentic sound.<\/p>\n
\n\t\u201cWhat\u2019s fascinating is we couldn\u2019t have done this work, say, two years ago, [until] what we did with Jackson\u2019s team and Get Back,\u201d Martin says. \u201cIt\u2019s a bit like knowing there are amazing artifacts beneath the soil in Pompeii, and scanning them and seeing if you can bring them to the surface. That\u2019s the kind of work we\u2019re doing.\u201d<\/p>\n
\n\tMartin likens the job to time travel, calling the process both fascinating and \u201ca bit eerie.\u201d He recalls one moment pulling vocals on Lennon from their 1964 Washington, D.C., concert at the Washington Coliseum: \u201cI was thinking to myself, \u2018Well, this is slightly unnatural because these vocals I\u2019m hearing could\u2019ve only existed if you were right next to his mouth that day.\u2019 \u201c<\/p>\n
\n\tMartin emphasizes that the work \u201chas to be done for a reason,\u201d given the responsibility that comes with restoring the archives. Overall, the goal is to have a subtle enough touch that no audience would notice he did much at all.<\/p>\n
\n\t\u201cIf I\u2019m playing you a mix I\u2019ve done, the last thing I want you to think about is what my mix was like, that it sounds like me \u2014 that\u2019s how you know it wasn\u2019t done right,\u201d he says. \u201cI want you to just think about how the song makes you feel.\u201d <\/p>\n
