{"id":15682,"date":"2025-06-26T07:19:09","date_gmt":"2025-06-26T07:19:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/15682\/"},"modified":"2025-06-26T07:19:09","modified_gmt":"2025-06-26T07:19:09","slug":"openai-flags-beijing-backed-zhipu-ai-as-a-top-rival","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/15682\/","title":{"rendered":"OpenAI flags Beijing-backed Zhipu AI as a top rival"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Niphon | Istock | Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>OpenAI is putting a spotlight on an under-the-radar artificial intelligence startup that it believes is on the &#8220;front line&#8221; of China&#8217;s race to lead the world in AI \u2014 and its not DeepSeek.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In a <a href=\"https:\/\/openaiglobalaffairs.substack.com\/p\/chinese-progress-at-the-front\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">blog post<\/a> on Wednesday, the company wrote that Beijing-backed Zhipu AI has made &#8220;notable progress&#8221; in the AI race, as global competition ramps up.<\/p>\n<p>Zhipu AI, founded in 2019, has been referred by domestic media as one of China&#8217;s &#8220;AI tigers&#8221; \u2014 a class of large language model unicorns seen as key to Beijing&#8217;s efforts to rival the U.S. and reduce its dependence on American technology<strong>.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>While fellow &#8220;AI tiger&#8221; DeepSeek has received the lion&#8217;s share of international attention after it released its R1 model in January, OpenAI suggests that Zhipu&#8217;s expansion outside China and its ties to Beijing deserve more scrutiny.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The startup has raised funds from several local governments, according to state media. &#8220;Zhipu AI leadership frequently\u00a0engages\u00a0with CCP officials, including Premier Li Qiang,&#8221; OpenAI claimed, pegging the value of state-backed investments in the startup at over $1.4 billion.<\/p>\n<p>Zhipu AI <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/china\/zhipu-ai-ramps-up-overseas-expansion-strategy-ahead-ipo-2025-04-23\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reportedly <\/a>has offices in the Middle East, the United Kingdom, Singapore and Malaysia, and is also running joint &#8220;innovation centers&#8221; projects across Southeast Asia, including in Indonesia and Vietnam.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Those factors could see Zhipu AI playing a key role in China&#8217;s &#8220;Digital Silk Road&#8221; strategy, as it offers AI infrastructure solutions to governments around the world.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The goal is to lock Chinese systems and standards into emerging markets before US or European rivals can, while showcasing a &#8216;responsible, transparent and audit-ready&#8217; Chinese AI alternative,&#8221; OpenAI said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Zhipu AI did not immediately respond to a request for comment on OpenAI&#8217;s statements. However, last week, Zhipu AI Chairman Liu Debing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncsti.gov.cn\/kjdt\/kjrd\/rgzn_kjrd\/202506\/t20250618_208030.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">told reporters<\/a> that the company hoped to contribute China&#8217;s AI power to the world.<\/p>\n<p>These aims represent a threat to OpenAI, which has received Washington&#8217;s support to promote its foundational models as the world&#8217;s go-to AI offering.<\/p>\n<p>During a visit to the UAE in May, U.S. President Donald Trump announced over $200 billion in commercial deals in the region, including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/05\/22\/stargate-uae-openai-nvidia-oracle.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">one for building a Stargate UAE AI campus<\/a> by OpenAI, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Oracle<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/NVDA\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Nvidia<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/CSCO\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Cisco Systems<\/a>. It&#8217;s expected to be launched in 2026.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The Stargate Project is a $500 billion AI-focused private sector investment vehicle, announced by OpenAI in January in partnership with Abu Dhabi investment firm MGX and Japan&#8217;s SoftBank.<\/p>\n<p>This month, OpenAI was also awarded a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/06\/16\/openai-wins-200-million-us-defense-contract.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">$200 million contract<\/a> to provide the U.S. Defense Department with artificial intelligence tools, and announced &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/openai.com\/global-affairs\/introducing-openai-for-government\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">OpenAI for Government<\/a>,&#8221; an initiative aimed at bringing its AI tools to public servants across the U.S.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Zhipu is also said to be working with its domestic military, helping China&#8217;s military to modernize through advanced artificial intelligence, which saw it <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ecfr.gov\/current\/title-15\/subtitle-B\/chapter-VII\/subchapter-C\/part-744\/appendix-Supplement%20No.%204%20to%20Part%20744\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">added<\/a> to the US Commerce Department&#8217;s Entity List in January.<\/p>\n<p>The company has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/technology\/artificial-intelligence\/chinas-zhipu-ai-takes-initial-steps-an-ipo-2025-04-15\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reportedly<\/a> initiated preliminary steps toward launching an initial public offering.
