The opposite is true for Southern California, Arizona, and New Mexico.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>El Ni\u00f1o, La Ni\u00f1a&#8217;s counterpart, flips the ENSO script, with colder-than-average temperatures and more precipitation likelier across the southern U.S. But NOAA doesn\u2019t expect it to show its face anytime soon.<\/p>\n<p>Then, there&#8217;s ENSO\u2019s neutral phase\u2014also known as La Nada\u2014which doesn\u2019t load the meteorological dice in either direction. Baker, Washington<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\"><strong>Average snowfall:<\/strong> 688 inches<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\"><strong>2024-2025 season snowfall:<\/strong> 585 inches<\/p>\n<p>Mt. Baker is the La Ni\u00f1a powder skiing poster child. During the 1998-1999 ski season, a moderately strong La Ni\u00f1a appeared. At Mt. Baker, it started snowing and didn\u2019t stop. By the end of that winter, the ski area had racked up <strong>1,140 inches of snow or 95 feet.<\/strong> NOAA verified the total as a new snowfall world record. La Ni\u00f1a or not, Mt. Baker is known for its deep snow. On average, the ski area receives nearly 700 inches each winter.<\/p>\n<p><img alt=\"Timberline Lodge remained open for skiing until Sunday, August 17, 2025. Last winter, the ski area opened early on November 8 thanks to a fall storm. By the time the season ended, Lookout Pass had amassed about 450 inches of snow at its summit.
