“We are asking for the community’s help right now, to help us weather the storm,” Magik Theatre Managing Director Mel Zarb-Cousin said.<\/p>\n

SAN ANTONIO \u2014 The Magik Theatre, located near Hemisfair, is facing a $300,000 loss in revenue. Managing Director Mel Zarb-Cousin said ongoing construction along South Alamo Street is largely to blame.<\/p>\n

“We are asking for the community’s help right now, to help us weather the storm,” she said.<\/p>\n

The theatre, which has performances for children and families, is in need of major help. Zarb-Cousin said they have surveyed people asking about their reasoning they’re not showing up to the venue.<\/p>\n

“More often than not, it is construction, or difficulty parking, things like that,” she said.<\/p>\n

Zarb-Cousin said ticket sales make up 50 percent of Magik’s budget. She said the other half comes from donors, grants and other contributions.<\/p>\n

“If one is suffering a lot, the other would have to pick up more,” Zarb-Cousin said. “And with this uncertain economy and climate right now, it is just not a sure bet.”<\/p>\n

Right now, the Magik Theatre has launched a new fundraising campaign called “Believe in Magik”<\/a> and is asking for community support.\u00a0<\/p>\n

“We believe that people believe in us. And believe in Magik, so that is what we are putting out there,” Zarb-Cousin said.<\/p>\n

Despite the challenges, she emphasized that the theatre remains committed to its mission of providing access to quality performing arts for young people.<\/p>\n

“There is nothing that is keeping us from doing our mission,” she said. “This is just a moment in time.”<\/p>\n

Construction on South Alamo Street is expected to wrap up by next spring. The Magik Theatre will continue with its fall season, before closing temporarily for renovations in early 2026.<\/p>\n
