{"id":157559,"date":"2025-08-19T05:00:11","date_gmt":"2025-08-19T05:00:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/157559\/"},"modified":"2025-08-19T05:00:11","modified_gmt":"2025-08-19T05:00:11","slug":"pending-project-marvel-vote-stirs-tension-amid-council","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/157559\/","title":{"rendered":"Pending Project Marvel vote stirs tension amid council"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>SAN ANTONIO &#8211; Project Marvel drama continued at Monday night&#8217;s District 10 town hall meeting.<\/p>\n<p>It was only supposed to focus on the FY 2026 budget, but things got a little tense between councilman Marc Whyte and the mayor.<\/p>\n<p>The heated exchange opened the conversation about Project Marvel right away, though Whyte tried to keep things about the city&#8217;s bank account.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Tonight we need to stay focused just on the upcoming 2026 budget,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>The topic of project marvel was front-and-center though; Mayor Gina Ortiz Jones \u2014 bringing it up first.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I want independent information and then I want to make sure your good councilman gives it to you,&#8221; she said early on in the meeting.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The dishonesty unfortunately continues,&#8221; Councilman Whyte started. &#8220;We had an agreement literally 5 minutes ago that we would allow the mayor to come up and speak if we kept it to the budget, and not project marvel.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>People in the crowd called for Mayor Jones to take her seat. She tried to respond; Councilman Whyte didn&#8217;t giving her any more time to speak.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Mayor, respectfully, you&#8217;ve had your opportunity Mayor,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>Just this afternoon, Jones doubled down on her request to slow down the process of building a new downtown Spurs arena.<\/p>\n<p>The organization released a <a href=\"https:\/\/news4sanantonio.com\/news\/local\/spurs-san-antonio-county-finalize-terms-for-new-13-billion-downtown-arena-project-marvel-nba-texas-podcast-sports-talk-alamo-city-mayor-ortiz-gina-ortiz-term-sheet#\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"https:\/\/news4sanantonio.com\/news\/local\/spurs-san-antonio-county-finalize-terms-for-new-13-billion-downtown-arena-project-marvel-nba-texas-podcast-sports-talk-alamo-city-mayor-ortiz-gina-ortiz-term-sheet#\" class=\"themeColorForLinks\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">term sheet<\/a> Monday for the council to vote on. The terms include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>No added costs for tax payers<\/li>\n<li>No money taken away from the city&#8217;s general fund.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Councilman Whyte asked neighbors to save their questions for a Marvel-specific meeting planned for September. He added his belief that term sheet will answer the big ones.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We have to get you all the information before November so that you know what you&#8217;re voting on,&#8221; Whyte said during the town hall.<\/p>\n<p>People we spoke to emphasized that they&#8217;re not against the Spurs, but they want to make sure a new arena is going to be the right fit.<\/p>\n<p>Questions about Project Marvel came up through the rest of the meeting. Many people asked why some councilmembers are ready to move things along.<\/p>\n<p>Councilman Whyte again said he&#8217;d like to keep the meeting about the budget, while saying he and his colleagues believe the term sheet has all the information the community needs.<\/p>\n<p>The council will vote on a resolution in regard to the term sheet on Thursday.
