Credit: Jim Gensheimer<\/p>\n<p>Our inner voice has always been a sanctuary \u2014 a private psychological space where half-formed sentences float safely between thought and speech. But what happens when machines can hear it too?<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s the question raised by a striking new study where researchers from Stanford University\u2019s BrainGate2 project report they have, for the first time, decoded \u201cinner speech\u201d \u2014 the experience of talking to oneself internally, often described as a voice in your head \u2014 directly from human brain activity.<\/p>\n<p>A Voice Without Sound<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/fx1_lrg-3.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/fx1_lrg-3.jpg\" height=\"996\" width=\"996\"   class=\"wp-image-288818 sp-no-webp\" alt=\"Diagram showing how the brain speech interpretation process works\" decoding=\"async\"\/> <\/a>Credit: Cell, 2025.<\/p>\n<p>For people with paralysis or advanced ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis), the promise of brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) has always been compelling. Previously, scientists have used BCIs to allow patients to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zmescience.com\/future\/paralyzed-manmoved-robotic-arm\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">control robotic arms<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zmescience.com\/research\/technology\/brain-computer-interface-drone-control\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">even drones<\/a> only using their thoughts. Other BCIs focused on communication, such as systems that allowed patients to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zmescience.com\/science\/news-science\/brain-computer-interface-fast-typing\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">type on a computer screen by focusing their thoughts<\/a> on particular words. <\/p>\n<p>Until now, most communication BCIs required patients to physically try speaking, even if no sound came out. This \u201cattempted speech\u201d produced reliable electrical signals in the motor cortex, which AI could then translate into words.<\/p>\n<p>But attempted speech is exhausting. \u201cIf we could decode [inner speech], then that could bypass the physical effort,\u201d neuroscientist Erin Kunz of Stanford, lead author of the new paper, told the New York Times. \u201cIt would be less tiring, so they could use the system for longer.\u201d  <\/p>\n<p>So her team asked: could the brain\u2019s signals while imagining words \u2014 with no movement at all \u2014 be enough?<\/p>\n<p>The answer was yes. Across four participants with ALS or brainstem stroke, tiny microelectrodes implanted directly in the brain\u2019s motor cortex picked up distinct firing patterns when they pictured sentences like \u2018I don\u2019t know how long you\u2019ve been here\u2018. Researchers then employed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zmescience.com\/future\/anthropics-new-ai-model-claude-will-scheme-and-even-blackmail-to-avoid-getting-shut-down\/\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"2587\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">AI models<\/a> that were trained to detect neural activity linked to specific phonemes \u2014 the basic units of speech \u2014 and assemble them into sentences. <\/p>\n<p>The system managed real-time decoding from a vocabulary of 125,000 words, sometimes with accuracy above 70%. Prior to these implants, one of the participants could communicate only with his eyes, moving his pupils up and down to signal yes and side to side to signal no<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is the first time we\u2019ve managed to understand what brain activity looks like when you just think about speaking,\u201d Kunz told the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/6bf4ef14-932b-4b2b-8d64-fac10fbfd43c\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Financial Times<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The Trouble With Thought Transparency<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cdn.zmescience.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/willett-bci-trio.jpeg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/willett-bci-trio-1024x683.jpeg\" height=\"683\" width=\"1024\"   class=\"wp-image-288815 sp-no-webp\" alt=\"\" decoding=\"async\"\/> <\/a>Erin Kunz, Frank Willett, and Benyamin Meschede-Krasa inspect a microelectrode array. Credit: Jim Gensheimer.<\/p>\n<p>The advance is thrilling, but it comes with a dark side: the same system sometimes detected unintended inner speech.<\/p>\n<p>In one experiment, participants silently counted colored shapes. As they ticked off numbers in their head, the implant picked up traces of those counts. \u201cThat means the boundary between private and public thought may be blurrier than we assume,\u201d warned ethicist Nita Farahany, author of The Battle For Your Brain, in an interview with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2025\/08\/15\/nx-s1-5500191\/brain-implants-that-decode-a-persons-inner-voice-may-threaten-privacy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NPR<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>To guard against such leaks, the Stanford team tested two safeguards. First, they trained AI models to ignore inner speech unless specifically instructed \u2014 effectively teaching the system to recognize only attempted speech. Second, they created an \u201cunlock\u201d phrase. The winning choice: Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. When participants imagined this phrase, the BCI switched on. Accuracy for detecting the password hit nearly 99%.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis study represents a step in the right direction, ethically speaking,\u201d said Cohen Marcus Lionel Brown, a bioethicist at the University of Wollongong, told the NYT. \u201cIt would give patients even greater power to decide what information they share and when.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But what if a similar system were to be employed by a bad-faith actor with none of these safeguards?<\/p>\n<p>Protecting Thoughts<\/p>\n<p>So far, brain implants like these are confined to clinical trials, subject to FDA oversight. But Farahany warned that consumer BCIs \u2014 like wearable caps used for gaming or productivity \u2014 may one day have similar decoding powers, without the same protections.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe more we push this research forward, the more transparent our brains become, and we have to recognize that this era of brain transparency really is an entirely new frontier for us,\u201d she said. <\/p>\n<p>That frontier is especially worrying given who might control it. Companies like Apple, Meta, or Google already build virtual assistants that respond when they hear a keyword. If BCIs reach consumers, these same firms could, in theory, tune into thoughts as casually as they now log keystrokes and record speech.<\/p>\n<p>For those of you concerned by such developments, it\u2019s maybe comforting that mind-reading isn\u2019t really straightforward. During trials when the participants had to respond to open-ended questions and commands, the recorded patterns made little sense. <\/p>\n<p>Cognitive neuroscientist Evelina Fedorenko of MIT, who was not involved in the research, noted that much of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zmescience.com\/future\/thought-processing-is-slow\/\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"2588\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">human thought<\/a> is not neatly verbal at all. \u201cWhat they\u2019re recording is mostly garbage,\u201d she told the New York Times, referring to spontaneous, unstructured thinking. <\/p>\n<p>So far, the current state of the art doesn\u2019t allow patients to hold conversations by tapping into inner speech. \u201cThe results are an initial proof of concept more than anything,\u201d said Kunz. <\/p>\n<p>But the direction is clear. As decoding improves, so will the risk of leakage. And so, we may need what amounts to firewalls for the mind. We must consider passwords, training protocols, and maybe regulation that treats inner speech as a new category of protected privacy.<\/p>\n<p>Where Do We Go From Here?<\/p>\n<p>The study underscores just how intertwined speaking and thinking really are. The motor cortex, once thought to only orchestrate muscle movements, turns out to also encode imagined language in a \u201cscaled-down\u201d version of the same patterns.<\/p>\n<p>Still, the potential is profound. As Stanford neurosurgeon Frank Willett put it: \u201cFuture systems could restore fluent, rapid and comfortable speech via inner speech alone\u201d (FT).<\/p>\n<p>The landscape around BCIs is shifting quickly. Private ventures like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zmescience.com\/medicine\/mind-and-brain\/neuralink-musk-ai\/\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"2586\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Elon Musk\u2019s Neuralink<\/a> and Sam Altman\u2019s new startup Merge are racing toward commercial devices. Regulators will face hard choices: how to ensure safety, but also how to safeguard what\u2019s left of our mental privacy.<\/p>\n<p>For now, the technology is far from mind reading. It struggles outside of controlled settings, and decoding free-form thoughts remains out of reach. But Kunz is optimistic. \u201cWe haven\u2019t hit the ceiling yet,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>And so we stand at the edge of a new frontier \u2014 one where even in silence we\u2019re no longer safe from being heard. You can choose not to open your mouth.
