But according to Arnold Schwarzenegger \u2013 who knows a thing or two about muscle \u2013 lifting heavy isn\u2019t the only pathway to gains. In his most recent <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/arnoldspumpclub.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-url=\"https:\/\/arnoldspumpclub.com\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\">Pump Club Newsletter,<\/a> he\u2019s shared a full-body workout using a pair of <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.t3.com\/features\/best-home-weights-dumbbells\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.t3.com\/features\/best-home-weights-dumbbells\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">dumbbells<\/a>, using one of his favourite training techniques that can help build serious muscle.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIntensity is the name of the game for results \u2013 but that doesn\u2019t mean you need to go heavy every workout or even require a lot of equipment,\u201d he writes. &#8220;Mechanical drop sets allow you to hit failure without changing weights \u2013 just by tweaking the movement. This keeps intensity high and prioritizes efficiency so you can work hard, feel accomplished, and get on with your day.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"vanilla-image-block\" style=\"padding-top:56.25%;\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/SUxFTtEPNSiD2x8ByrwY3S.png\" alt=\"A woman performing dumbbell goblet squat\"   loading=\"lazy\" data-original-mos=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/SUxFTtEPNSiD2x8ByrwY3S.png\" data-pin-media=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/SUxFTtEPNSiD2x8ByrwY3S.png\"\/><\/p>\n<p>(Image credit: Getty Images)<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-4b2cb8c5-73fa-481e-a0d6-0bfb22603b09\" data-url=\"\" href=\"\" data-hl-processed=\"none\"\/>The workout<a id=\"elk-seasonal\" data-url=\"\" href=\"\" data-hl-processed=\"none\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"3f2526c1-c430-4462-8b7e-e057ad4f2ae7-0\">For this workout you\u2019ll have three blocks to work through. \u201cEach block is a mechanical drop set: 3 back-to-back variations of one movement pattern, going from hardest to easiest,\u201d says Arnold. Perform all three exercises in the block one after the other, resting for as little as possible (or not at all). Once you\u2019ve completed one round, rest for 60-90 seconds, then repeat the block one to two more times before moving on to the next block of exercises. Here\u2019s your workout:<\/p>\n<p>You may like<\/p>\n<p id=\"2e05e732-6cd9-48d4-9641-837247f6e21a\"><strong>Block 1 (lower body)<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul id=\"6f408ad8-401b-4f1e-88e9-72bd7f308df1\">\n<li>Dumbbell front foot elevated lunge \u2013 6 reps per leg<\/li>\n<li>Dumbbell alternating reverse lunge \u2013 8 reps per leg<\/li>\n<li>Dumbbell goblet squat \u2013 10 reps<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p id=\"f7147d94-0238-414f-8964-c0bd13d6d3b6\"><strong>Block 2 (upper body)<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul id=\"aedcaf09-1d10-4b04-ae96-85ed07c9db35\">\n<li>Feet-elevated push-up \u2013 10-20 reps<\/li>\n<li>Regular push-up \u2013 10 reps<\/li>\n<li>Incline push-up (hands supported on a surface) \u2013 as many reps as possible<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p id=\"9bf23053-ee8a-479d-8f2d-420ff3188188\"><strong>Block 3 (glutes)<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul id=\"b5d4fd18-5fe0-450b-88d4-c368aaff1a1c\">\n<li>Dumbbell single leg hip thrusts \u2013 8 reps per leg<\/li>\n<li>Single leg hip thrusts \u2013 10 reps per leg<\/li>\n<li>Hip thrusts \u2013 12 reps<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p id=\"4f521d36-2810-48c7-80e3-5ad28990294c\">If you haven&#8217;t trained in a while or don&#8217;t use mechanical dropsets in your training, you may experience some DOMS. This is nothing to worry about and should subside in a couple of days, but consider foam rolling, doing some <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.t3.com\/active\/a-stretchologist-shares-five-static-stretches-to-boost-full-body-flexibility-and-reduce-muscle-soreness\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.t3.com\/active\/a-stretchologist-shares-five-static-stretches-to-boost-full-body-flexibility-and-reduce-muscle-soreness\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">stretches<\/a>, or using a <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.t3.com\/features\/best-massage-gun\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.t3.com\/features\/best-massage-gun\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">massage gun<\/a> to help ease muscle soreness.
