The parts of Washington not inside the view line are in the southwestern areas of the state.<\/p>\n<p>The agency&#8217;s forecast means that the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swpc.noaa.gov\/phenomena\/aurora\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">aurora borealis<\/a> may be seen in 15 U.S. states overnight from Aug. 18-19, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/stargazing\/auroras\/northern-lights-may-be-visible-in-these-15-states-aug-18-19\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Space.com<\/a> reported.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;A large coronal hole is currently facing Earth, ejecting a fast-moving stream of\u00a0solar wind\u00a0in our general direction. Coronal holes are open regions in\u00a0the sun&#8217;s magnetic field, which allow solar wind to escape more easily,&#8221; the website reported. &#8220;The high-speed solar wind stream is forecast to buffet Earth&#8217;s\u00a0magnetic field\u00a0tonight, raising the potential of sparking minor geomagnetic storm conditions.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s what stargazers should know.<\/p>\n<p>Will it be cloudy in Washington state tonight, Aug. 18?<\/p>\n<p>Tonight&#8217;s cloud forecast is a mixed bag for Washington state. The <a href=\"https:\/\/graphical.weather.gov\/sectors\/sectorDay.php?sector=pacnorthwest&amp;view=public&amp;expand=false#tabs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">National Weather Service&#8217;s sky cover prediction<\/a> for 11 p.m. shows good viewing conditions in Eastern Washington, while dark clouds may cover about half the sky in heavily populated parts of Western Washington.<\/p>\n<p>Places such as Spokane, Moses Lake, Pasco, and Omak will have sky cover percentages ranging from 8% to 31%, according to the NWS. Anything around 30% or less is generally considered &#8220;good&#8221; for viewing the night sky, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/stargazing\/eclipses\/total-blood-moon-lunar-eclipse-2025-what-is-the-us-weather-forecast-for-march-13#:~:text=GOOD%3A%20Cloud%20cover%20ranges%20from%20clear%20to%20scattered%20cloud%20cover%3B%20generally%2C%20no%20more%20than%2030%25.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Space.com<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The picture changes going west. Places such as Seattle and Olympia are predicted to have opaque clouds covering from 32% to 53% of the sky at 11 p.m., according to the NWS. And dark clouds are expected to cover about 83% of the night sky.<\/p>\n<p>When is the best time to see the northern lights in Washington state?<\/p>\n<p>The best time to see the northern lights in Washington is typically within an hour or two of midnight, from 10 p.m. to 2 a.m. PT, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.spaceweather.gov\/content\/tips-viewing-aurora#:~:text=it%20is%20dark.-,Timing,-%3A%C2%A0Best%20aurora\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">NOAA<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;These hours of active aurora expand towards evening and morning as the level of geomagnetic activity increases,&#8221; NOAA&#8217;s website states. &#8220;There may be aurora in the evening and morning but it is usually not as active and therefore, not as visually appealing.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Skywatchers should also try to find a dark location away from city lights.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;For a more immersive and vibrant experience, consider capturing long exposures with a camera to reveal the true brilliance of the auroras,&#8221; states the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.auroraadmin.com\/locations\/united-states\/washington\/#:~:text=What%20should%20I%20expect%20when%20viewing%20the%20auroras%3F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">AuroraAdmin website<\/a>. &#8220;However, keep in mind that the colors you observe with your eyes may not perfectly match the striking tones seen in photographs.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>What are the northern lights?<\/p>\n<p>The auroras are\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.kitsapsun.com\/story\/news\/nation\/2024\/05\/10\/northern-lights-aurora-when-time\/73638964007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">a natural light display in Earth&#8217;s sky<\/a>\u00a0that are famously best seen in high-latitude regions of the Northern and Southern hemispheres.<\/p>\n<p>The phenomenon is caused when electrically charged particles from space enter Earth&#8217;s atmosphere and collide with\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.kitsapsun.com\/story\/graphics\/2024\/05\/18\/northern-lights-colors-explained\/73731506007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">molecules and gases like oxygen and nitrogen<\/a>, causing the atmospheric particles to gain energy. To return to their normal state, the particles\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gi.alaska.edu\/monitors\/aurora-forecast\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">release that energy<\/a>\u00a0in the form of light, according to the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gi.alaska.edu\/monitors\/aurora-forecast\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">University of Alaska at Fairbanks Geophysical Institute<\/a>\u00a0website, which tracks the phenomenon.<\/p>\n<p>As auroras form, Earth&#8217;s magnetic field\u00a0redirects the particles toward the poles through a process that produces a stunning display of rays, spirals, and flickers that have fascinated humans for millennia.
