\n\tAs Brokeback Mountain<\/a> returns to theaters for its 20th anniversary<\/a>, a writer behind the 2005 gay neo-Western romance recently recalled its Oscars<\/a> snub.<\/p>\n

\n\tCo-writer Diana Ossana<\/a> recently recalled Crash<\/a> director Paul Haggis<\/a> introducing her to Clint Eastwood<\/a> at a party for the Academy Award<\/a> nominees after voting had ended, several weeks before the awards show.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cPaul started walking me over and he goes, \u2018Diana, I have to tell you, he hasn\u2019t seen your movie,’\u201d recalled Ossana to The New York Times<\/a>. \u201cAnd it was like somebody kicked me in the stomach. That\u2019s when I knew we would not win Best Picture.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tDespite winning a record number of Best Picture prizes during the awards season, including the Golden Globe, BAFTA, Critics\u2019 Choice Award and Independent Spirit Award, Brokeback Mountain infamously lost the Oscar to Crash.<\/p>\n

\n\tOssana is still convinced homophobia in Hollywood played a part in the defeat. \u201cPeople want to deny that, but what else could it have been? We\u2019d won everything up until then,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

\n\tAfter legendary Academy voters like Ernest Borgnine and Tony Curtis publicly stated they would not watch the Ang Lee<\/a>-helmed film, Ossana told The Times, \u201cI absolutely think that block of voters kept this movie from winning Best Picture.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tLee previously reflected on the snub<\/a> to Deadline. \u201cYour guess is as good as mine,\u201d he said last month. \u201cThere are times when I feel like there\u2019s an unlimited willingness to watch the movie. There\u2019s so much love for it. Generally, you feel like it\u2019s a breakthrough, that it broke all barriers. People seem to melt down. And you cannot even define it as gay cinema. It\u2019s not gay cinema, right? It\u2019s a love story.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI\u2019m nothing but grateful. I have no bitterness. It never occurred to me,\u201d added Lee, who won Best Director for the film.<\/p>\n

\n\tBrokeback Mountain also won Best Adapted Screenplay for Ossana and Larry McMurtry.
