KINSTON, N.C. (WITN) – With a flood warning in effect for the Neuse River and Hurricane Erin approaching, set to bring rain and gusty winds, Kinston Fire-Rescue and the Neuseway Nature Park are getting prepared. <\/p>\n
Hurricane Erin, swirling in the Atlantic, could create some concerns for Kinston as the WITN First Alert Weather Team says the storm\u2019s expected to bring 20-25 mph winds to the city, along with some rain.<\/p>\n
While Kinston Fire-Rescue Captain Stevens Nimmo says they aren\u2019t too worried, they are prepared for any changes that could come with the storm. <\/p>\n
\u201cWe have our high-water rescue vehicle,\u201d Captain Nimmo said. \u201cWe can go into deep water and rescue people from stranded motorists to people stuck in their homes. We also have our new jet ski to go out on the river.\u201d<\/p>\n
As of Tuesday, Captain Nimmo says the river sits at 15.2 ft. It\u2019s expected to crest Wednesday morning at 15.6 feet. When it reaches 16 feet, flooding is expected at the Neuseway Nature Park\u2019s campground, something campground host Paul Simmons says they\u2019re keeping an eye on.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhen the water\u2019s moving fast, like it is, it\u2019s doing real good,\u201d Simmons said. \u201cWhen the water slows down, it\u2019s a little worrying cause it\u2019s got no place to go down.\u201d<\/p>\n
Simmons says he doesn\u2019t expect the park\u2019s campground to close.<\/p>\n
As preparations continue, Captain Nimmo says it\u2019s important people avoid going to low-lying areas, pay attention to road closures and barricades, and avoid driving through flooded roadways.<\/p>\n
