{"id":160316,"date":"2025-08-20T05:38:21","date_gmt":"2025-08-20T05:38:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/160316\/"},"modified":"2025-08-20T05:38:21","modified_gmt":"2025-08-20T05:38:21","slug":"6-year-old-nyc-elementary-school-student-and-her-mom-deported","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/160316\/","title":{"rendered":"6-Year-Old NYC Elementary School Student and Her Mom Deported"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A 6-year-old girl and her mother \u2014 whose <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecity.nyc\/2025\/08\/15\/family-separation-26-federal-plaza-ice-ps-89\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">arrests by ICE last week<\/a> sparked widespread condemnation \u2014 were deported to Ecuador Tuesday, local elected officials said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Martha and her 6-year-old daughter were flown to Ecuador early Tuesday morning, according to Assemblymember Catalina Cruz, who confirmed the deportation with congressional liaisons in Rep. Alexandra Ocasio-Cortez\u2019s office. Cruz and Councilmember Shekar Krishnan <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/voteshekar\/status\/1957873101770826234\" rel=\"nofollow\">issued a joint statement saying they were heartbroken by the development<\/a>. Ocasio-Cortez\u2019s office didn\u2019t respond to a request for comment immediately.<\/p>\n<p>ICE\u2019s detainee locator, which had previously shown Martha at one of the nation\u2019s few family detention centers, in Texas, said that she was in Washington, D.C., late Monday evening, according to advocates. By Tuesday morning, the system no longer had any record of her whereabouts.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>A spokesperson for the Department of Homeland Security didn\u2019t immediately return a request for comment. The agency had previously confirmed the family\u2019s arrest and detention, saying they had removal orders in place.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe encourage every person here illegally to take advantage of this offer and reserve the chance to come back to the U.S. the right legal way to live American dream [sic],\u201d Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin wrote in a prior statement. \u201cIf not, you will be arrested and deported without a chance to return.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The child had attended P.S. 89 in Queens. Its principal had pleaded with ICE agents to release her in a letter <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecity.nyc\/2025\/08\/15\/family-separation-26-federal-plaza-ice-ps-89\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">reported on by THE CITY<\/a>. The student, the principal wrote, is \u201ca kind, respectful, and dedicated young lady\u201d whose \u201cunexpected removal will cause significant disruption to her learning and will likely have a deep emotional impact on her classmates and our entire school community.\u201d The girl\u2019s name is also being withheld at the family\u2019s request.<\/p>\n<p>The 6-year-old\u2019s arrest with her mother and 19-year-old siblingg, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecity.nyc\/2025\/08\/15\/family-separation-26-federal-plaza-ice-ps-89\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">first reported by THE CITY<\/a>, drew widespread uproar, with New York Gov. Kathy Hochul condemning it as \u201ccruel and unjust\u201d to break up a family this way as two other siblings remain here. Martha\u2019s 16-year-old public high school student is now in the care of her 21-year-old brother.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPresident Trump promised only to target \u2018the worst of the worst,\u2019\u2019\u2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/GovKathyHochul\/status\/1957543110428487942\" rel=\"nofollow\">Hochul wrote in a statement Monday<\/a>. \u201cIf a seven-year-old is who President Trump considers the \u2018worst of the worst,\u2019 then the promise was a lie from the start.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But the child was hardly the first elementary school student in New York City to be arrested and then deported as part of President Donald Trump\u2019s\u00a0 mass deportation agenda.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In June and July, the New York City field office, which covers parts of Long Island and several counties north of the city, arrested 48 children, of whom 32 had already been deported, according to ICE data shared by the <a href=\"https:\/\/deportationdata.org\/index.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Deportation Data Project<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u2018We Have Allowed for This To Happen\u2019<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>As THE CITY previously reported, Martha arrived from Ecuador with her daughter who was five at the time and her son Manuel, who is now 19, in 2022. She had her asylum claims denied last year.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Martha\u2019s two other children are a 16-year-old daughter, who arrived from Ecuador last year, and a 21-year-old son, who lives in Long Island and is now caring for his sister in Queens. Because those two arrived separately, they are in different deportation proceedings.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m so angry that we have allowed for this to happen. The whole world was watching,\u201d said Mariposa Benitez, one of two volunteer social workers behind the group <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mitlalli.org\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Mitlalli<\/a>, which has created an ad-hoc, volunteer detention support network that collects the information of families who attend immigration court appointments and ICE check-ins to monitor whether they\u2019re detained.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Make the Road New York is now representing Manuel, who was separated from his mother and younger sister upon their arrest, the organization confirmed.
