Ain\u2019t happening. They hate Cuomo. I\u2019m in the streets every day. All I hear is \u2018slapping fannies and killing grannies.\u2019 He\u2019s never apologized,\u201d Sliwa said of Andrew Cuomo\u2019s COVID and #MeToo scandals.<\/p>\n<p>Curtis Sliwa regularly campaigns in the subways he\u2019s patrolled as a Guardian Angel for decades. Debra L Rothenberg\/Shutterstock<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/08\/19\/us-news\/nyc-voters-sour-on-socialist-democrat-zohran-mamdani-in-latest-mayoral-poll-but-hes-still-the-frontrunner\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a new AARP poll shows<\/a> Mamdani\u2019s support at 42% among registered voters; Cuomo is at 23%, fellow independent Adams is at 9%, and Sliwa claims 16%. It would stand to reason the three need to become one to beat the Democratic socialist. <\/p>\n<p>\t\t\tMore From\t\t\t\t\t\t\tKirsten Fleming<\/p>\n<p>But Sliwa says it isn\u2019t happening.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNobody is getting out. Cuomo isn\u2019t, [Eric] Adams isn\u2019t. Every day there\u2019s a discussion about dropping out, that\u2019s a good day for Mamdani,\u201d Sliwa said.<\/p>\n<p>I met with the 71-year-old at his Midtown campaign headquarters. While he\u2019s been an NYC tabloid figure since the late 1970s, when he launched the civilian crime-fighting group the Guardian Angels, he\u2019s lately been almost unrecognizable \u2014\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/07\/28\/us-news\/curtis-sliwa-pledges-again-to-hang-up-iconic-red-beret-if-he-wins-nyc-mayoral-race\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">taking off his signature red beret<\/a> in meetings to look more like a serious politician.<\/p>\n<p>Zohran Mamdani, the Democratic Socialist, is leading the crowded field in the mayoral race. James Keivom<\/p>\n<p>The thing is, I love everything Sliwa has to say, especially about quality-of-life crackdowns. <\/p>\n<p>He wants to cut taxes, ditch congestion pricing and tackle the costly epidemic of fare evasion.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI laugh when <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/06\/15\/us-news\/transit-union-boss-touts-mamdani-free-bus-fare-plan-at-campaign-rally\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mamdani says \u2018free bus fare<\/a>\u2018 and everyone is having a heart attack. I said, \u2018Hold on, people aren\u2019t paying in the first place. Why don\u2019t we just enforce the fare?&#8217;\u201d Sliwa said. \u201cAdams didn\u2019t do it. Cuomo didn\u2019t do it. We need a no-tolerance policy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mayor Eric Adams, who is running as an independent, is not performing well in polls. REUTERS<\/p>\n<p>Can I get an amen?<\/p>\n<p>Like Mamdani, Sliwa speaks about affordability, especially for younger New Yorkers who cannot \u201cafford the American dream anymore. They\u2019re in their 30s and still living in a dormitory\u201d \u2014\u00a0I think he means they have a lot of roommates \u2014\u00a0\u201cyet they have a professional career and make good money.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Unlike the photogenic Mamdani, the Republican is not offering a buffet of cockamamie socialist policy \u201csolutions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But in this crowded field, I don\u2019t think Sliwa has a shot at taking down Mamdani and his dangerous DSA ideology.<\/p>\n<p>He wholeheartedly disagrees. \u201cI have a very good shot.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Curtis Sliwa regularly campaigns on the subway, calling it the \u201cbest focus group of all. All it costs you is a swipe.\u201d Debra L Rothenberg\/Shutterstock<\/p>\n<p>The last time Sliwa ran for mayor, in 2021, the city was lumbering through the COVID cloud. He lost to Eric Adams and earned only 27.8% of the vote.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI feel I can start with about 28%,\u201d Sliwa said, \u201cand if I can get up to 32, 33, 34%, I\u2019ll be the next mayor of New York City.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This time around, his campaign is pushing early voting, trying to court Millennials and Gen Z-ers who aren\u2019t drunk on Mamdani\u2019s \u201ceverything is free\u201d socialist brew \u2014\u00a0and reaching out to Muslim voters.<\/p>\n<p>Mamdani is far, far more progressive than most Muslims in the city. But Sliwa believes many conservative Muslims are turned off by cultural attacks from some politicians on the right, like Marjorie Taylor Greene. Last month, the representative from Georgia shared a meme of the Statue of Liberty covered in a burka.<\/p>\n<p>Because of insults like that, \u201cSome feel compelled to support Mamdani,\u201d said Sliwa. <\/p>\n<p>Curtis Sliwa has been a tabloid staple since the late 1970s, when he started the Guardian Angels. I\u2019m working on them to vote for me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sliwa blames Adams and his cronyism scandals for the rise of Mamdani. As for Cuomo, \u201cHe told a group in the Hamptons that <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/07\/19\/us-news\/cuomo-i-will-move-to-florida-god-forbid-if-mamdani-become-nyc-mayor\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">he\u2019s moving to Florida<\/a> if he loses. He\u2019s waving a white flag,\u201d alleged the Canarsie native.<\/p>\n<p>Despite reports, Sliwa said President Trump hasn\u2019t offered him a job in Washington to get him out of the race \u2014 nor has Trump called the Republican candidate to offer support.<\/p>\n<p>Curtis Sliwa has started removing his signature red beret during some campaign meetings. James Messerschmidt for NY Post<\/p>\n<p>Sliwa is non-plussed<strong>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI believe the president has far more serious issues to deal with, like peace in Ukraine and, if he can \u2014 and he alone can \u2014 resolving the Gaza situation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As we wrap up our interview, Sliwa puts on his hat<strong> <\/strong>and we venture down Sixth Avenue. The red beret is like a beacon, attracting a Midtown crowd. One man taps him for a selfie. A group of blue-collar workers abandon their spot in a lunch-truck line to shake his hand and wish him luck.<\/p>\n<p>A smartly dressed woman in her 50s flags him down. A black man calls out in heavily-accented English from behind the wheel of a black SUV: \u201cCurtis, I\u2019ve always wanted to meet you!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Curtis Sliwa said New York voters haven\u2019t forgiven Andrew Cuomo and that he\u2019s never apologized for his personal and professional scandals. Matthew McDermott<\/p>\n<p>A union plumber who grew up in Staten Island jumped off a bench to offer his support.
