{"id":1604,"date":"2025-06-21T06:24:10","date_gmt":"2025-06-21T06:24:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/1604\/"},"modified":"2025-06-21T06:24:10","modified_gmt":"2025-06-21T06:24:10","slug":"coco-vandeweghe-explains-why-she-likes-that-coco-gauff-lost-her-first-grass-court-match-of-the-season-in-berlin","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/1604\/","title":{"rendered":"CoCo Vandeweghe explains why she &#8216;likes&#8217; that Coco Gauff lost her first grass court match of the season in Berlin"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>CoCo Vandeweghe assessed Coco Gauff\u2019s disappointing start to the grass court season.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Almost two weeks after her French Open triumph, the 21-year-old made the transition from clay to grass, with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetennisgazette.com\/tag\/wimbledon\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Wimbledon<\/a> on the horizon.<\/p>\n<p>She faced Wang Xinyu, the same player who Gauff defeated in Berlin back in 2022, but the World number 49 turned the tables on the American.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetennisgazette.com\/news\/coco-gauff-sends-message-on-social-media-after-losing-her-first-grass-court-match-of-the-season\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Wang claimed a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Gauff<\/a> and as a result the American lost her first match of the 2025 grass court season.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"634\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/GettyImages-2220216896-1024x634.jpg\" alt=\"Day 4 - Berlin Tennis Open by Hylo\" \/>Photo by Robert Prange\/Getty Images<strong>What did CoCo Vandeweghe say about Coco Gauff\u2019s defeat at the Berlin Open?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/CoCo%20Vandeweghe%20explains%20why%20she%20&#039;likes&#039;%20that%20Coco%20Gauff%20lost%20her%20first%20grass%20court%20match%20of%20the%20season%20in%20Berlin\">Coco Gauff<\/a> looked out of sorts as she hit 25 unforced errors and registered seven double faults.<\/p>\n<p>Wang defeated Gauff for the first time in her career and in the process claimed her second successive top 20 win of 2025 after defeating Daria Kasatkina in the previous round.<\/p>\n<p>It is not the ideal start to Gauff\u2019s stint on grass, but her compatriot and former <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetennisgazette.com\/tag\/wta\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">WTA<\/a> player <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetennisgazette.com\/tag\/coco-vandeweghe\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">CoCo Vandeweghe<\/a> thinks this can be turned into a positive for the World number two.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI just don\u2019t even think this shakes her confidence at all. This is not going to be her best surface, but you know what she is going to do,\u201d Vandeweghe told Tennis Channel.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe is going to take this loss and really work on herself. That is what we have seen time and time again from Coco Gauff. She is the ultimate competitor.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat is what we always see from Coco, as much as we talk about the negative aspects of what goes wrong in her game, what we don\u2019t talk about enough is what goes right.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen the chips are down and she needs to fight and be the dog out there and just grind out situations, good or bad, she does it time and time again. I almost like that she lost, to not have the euphoria state of I am the Grand Slam champion kind of swagger walking around the court.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe has a chip on her shoulder now, like we are having right now. [People are saying] Coco Gauff doesn\u2019t have a chance at Wimbledon, this isn\u2019t her best surface. When does Coco Gauff thrive? In those moments.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"665\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/GettyImages-2220216900-1024x665.jpg\" alt=\"Day 4 - Berlin Tennis Open by Hylo\" \/>Photo by Robert Prange\/Getty Images<strong>What did Coco Gauff say about her Berlin Open defeat?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Gauff has struggled on grass since she reached the Wimbledon fourth round as a 15-year-old in 2019.<\/p>\n<p>The 21-year-old has yet to progress beyond the round of 16 at SW19 and she is currently without a title on grass.<\/p>\n<p>She is now set to head into Wimbledon with just one grass court match under her belt, but Gauff is keeping her spirits up despite her recent defeat.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was a tough one today but I\u2019m happy to be back on court,\u201d she posted on social media. \u201cI tried my best to adjust with the quick turnaround but it wasn\u2019t enough.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs always, I\u2019m learning as I go so I hope to do better next time.
