All hail A’ja Wilson.<\/p>\n
Are there four more impactful, truer words at this point in the WNBA season? You’d be hard-pressed to find another athlete consistently performing at the level Wilson is \u2014 and doing it all so easily, I might add \u2014\u00a0at any point in the season, but in August 2025 there’s really only one.<\/p>\n
The timing could not be more excellent. The Aces have won their last eight games and next face the Mercury, who they most recently beat 86-83 on August 15. Wilson put up a monster 32-point, 12-rebound, 5-block performance Tuesday night against the Dream and is the only player in the league who is starting to make 30-point games look casual.<\/p>\n
There’s also another reason the timing is especially sweet: the Lynx’s Napheesa Collier, who has justifiably been on the receiving end of a lot of positive attention due to her own steady MVP campaign<\/a> this season, hasn’t played a game since August 2. And though the Mercury’s Alyssa Thomas is an especially formidable MVP candidate<\/a> as well, Wilson’s game against the Dream was a stark reminder that she’s not going anywhere anytime soon.<\/p>\n It isn’t just that she’s electric on the court, or that the easily pulls off stat lines that are impossible, but Wilson sets and breaks records with a fluidity that we haven’t seen in recent years \u2014 and we are collectively experiencing a period in the WNBA in which athletes are smashing precedents the same way you or I step outside to pick up the paper (or, you know, pick up our phones to start scrolling). <\/p>\n Read those words again: 32 points, 12 rebounds, 5 blocks. If that doesn’t scream, “Get out of my way,” it’s not clear what else might do it.<\/p>\n It’s starting to become a rallying cry toward the end of each WNBA season of late, but it bears repeating: until she decides otherwise, this season (as with them all since 2020) and that all-important MVP title is Wilson’s until she decides it just isn’t anymore. Tuesday night’s game against the Dream was Wilson’s third of her career with those numbers, and she bumped past Brittney Griner and Candace Parker on her way toward achieving it.<\/p>\n There’s a lot of debate surrounding women, athletic peak, and age; there’s a lot of inexcusable and often exhausting chatter. Wilson is only 29 and appears to only just be getting started. The team’s next match against the Mercury will be at tough (and crucial) one \u2014 and, if Wilson keeps this up, it’ll also be a little bit incendiary. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"All hail A’ja Wilson.
