\n\tA week out from publication, \u201cBabel\u201d and \u201cYellowface\u201d author R.F. Kuang<\/a>\u2018s new fantasy novel \u201cKatabasis<\/a>\u201d is already in the works as a TV series at Amazon MGM Studios<\/a>. \u201cThe Walking Dead\u201d showrunner Angela Kang<\/a> is set as writer and showrunner on the project.<\/p>\n

\n\tReleasing Aug. 26 from Harper Voyager Publishing<\/a>, Kuang\u2019s \u201cKatabasis\u201d is a fantastical academic satire that follows Alice Law, a graduate student studying Magick at Cambridge University, as she descends into the underworld to retrieve her deceased advisor, Professor Grimes, in order to get his recommendation to secure her future after graduation. Alice\u2019s academic rival, Peter Murdoch, decides to join her, and together they embark on a journey through the courts of Hell in search of Grimes.<\/p>\n

\n\tAmazon MGM Studios, which has optioned the TV rights for \u201cKatabasis,\u201d describes the adaptation as \u201ca dark academia fantasy in which two graduate students in Magick must put aside their rivalry and journey through Hell to save their professor\u2019s soul \u2014 perhaps at the cost of their own.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tKang will executive produce the project alongside Kuang, Mandy Safavi (via Kang\u2019s Kang & Co. banner), Ben Smith and Jeffrey Weiner. Adam Docksey will co-executive produce for Captivate Ent.<\/p>\n

\n\tMost recently, Kang was set as showrunner on the now-scrapped \u201cSilk: Spider Society\u201d<\/a> live-action series at Amazon MGM Studios, where she is currently under a multi-year overall deal. Kang previously served as showrunner of \u201cThe Walking Dead\u201d and is an executive producer on one of AMC\u2019s ongoing spinoff series, \u201cThe Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon.\u201d Kang got her start in the TV industry as a writer on FX\u2019s \u201cTerriers.\u201d <\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cKatabasis\u201d comes on the heels of back-to-back best sellers and awards darlings for Kuang: 2022\u2019s \u201cBabel,\u201d which explores themes of imperialism,\u00a0racism\u00a0and\u00a0capitalism through a fantastical version of Oxford University in the 1800s, and 2023\u2019s \u201cYellowface,\u201d a satirical novel covering racial diversity in the publishing industry. <\/p>\n

\n\tKuang\u2019s debut work was the epic Chinese fantasy series \u201cThe Poppy War,\u201d consisting of three books published between 2018 and 2020. An alum of Cambridge and Oxford and currently a PhD candidate at Yale, Kuang\u2019s sales total more than four million copies across all of her novels combined.<\/p>\n
