{"id":161608,"date":"2025-08-20T17:11:18","date_gmt":"2025-08-20T17:11:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/161608\/"},"modified":"2025-08-20T17:11:18","modified_gmt":"2025-08-20T17:11:18","slug":"hurricane-erin-shuts-down-beaches-from-florida-to-new-york","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/161608\/","title":{"rendered":"Hurricane Erin shuts down beaches from Florida to New York"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Hurricane Erin\u00a0continues to churn in the Atlantic waters hundreds of miles off the\u00a0US, <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/08\/19\/us-news\/hurricane-erin-sparks-coastal-threats-all-along-the-east-coast\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">prompting officials to close\u00a0beaches\u00a0along the East Coast<\/a> from the\u00a0mid-Atlantic\u00a0to the\u00a0Northeast\u00a0due to massive waves and potentially deadly\u00a0rip currents\u00a0just as\u00a0families\u00a0take their final vacations of the\u00a0summer.<\/p>\n<p>Hurricane Erin isn\u2019t forecast to make landfall along the US East Coast.<\/p>\n<p>However, dangerous impacts are expected nonetheless due to outer rain bands possibly lashing\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/video\/wild-video-shows-tidal-surge-swallowing-homes-as-hurricane-erin-slams-outer-banks\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">North Carolina\u2019s Outer Banks<\/a>, where\u00a0tropical storm warnings\u00a0and storm surge warnings remain in effect.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/08\/20\/us-news\/tropical-waves-brew-behind-hurricane-erin-as-atlantics-main-development-region-roars-to-life-with-2-areas-to-watch\/?utm_campaign=nypost&amp;utm_medium=referral\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">The tropical storm warning<\/a> is in effect from Beaufort Inlet, North Carolina, to the North Carolina-Virginia\u00a0border (about 170 miles). A tropical storm watch is in effect north of the North Carolina-Virginia border to Chincoteague, Virginia (about 150 miles).<\/p>\n<p>Officials in Dare and Hyde counties declared local states of emergency and issued mandatory evacuation orders for tourists and residents in popular areas like Ocracoke Island and Hatteras Island.<\/p>\n<p>On Tuesday afternoon, North Carolina Gov. Josh Stein declared a state of emergency to assist with the response to Hurricane Erin and to mobilize resources.<\/p>\n<p>Hurricane Erin\u00a0continues to churn in the Atlantic waters hundreds of miles off the\u00a0US, prompting officials to close\u00a0beaches\u00a0along the East Coast from the\u00a0mid-Atlantic\u00a0to the\u00a0Northeast. Gregory P. Mango<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo folks on the coast, now is the time to\u00a0prepare,\u201d he said in a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/NC_Governor\/status\/1957886685670162930\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">post on X<\/a>. \u201cCheck your emergency kits, make sure you have emergency alerts turned on, and listen to emergency guidance in case you need to evacuate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>North Carolina Emergency Management officials opened a State Operated Shelter (SOS) in conjunction with Warren County Emergency Management for those who needed to evacuate due to Hurricane Erin.<\/p>\n<p>Due to the threats of a\u00a0storm surge\u00a0and waves of up to 12 feet in some spots, local officials and forecasters have been warning people to stay out of the water for\u00a0safety.<\/p>\n<p>Hurricane Erin isn\u2019t forecast to make landfall along the US East Coast, according to reports. AP<\/p>\n<p>A spokesperson for\u00a0Wrightsville Beach, North Carolina, told FOX Weather their rescue crews conducted nearly 60 water rescues on Monday and another 20 on Tuesday due to strong rip currents. The town\u00a0has now told all beachgoers to stay out of the water\u00a0through Friday as Erin gets even closer.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese swells are producing powerful rip currents that can create extremely hazardous swimming conditions,\u201d said Sam Proffitt, director of Wrightsville Beach Ocean Rescue. \u201cThe safety of our beachgoers is always our top priority, and we urge everyone to follow this advisory.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\tStart your day with all you need to know\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p class=\"inline-module__cta\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\tMorning Report delivers the latest news, videos, photos and more.\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\tThanks for signing up!\n\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>Where is Hurricane Erin?<\/p>\n<p>As of the latest advisory from the National\u00a0Hurricane\u00a0Center (NHC), <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/08\/17\/us-news\/hurricane-erin-remains-an-extremely-dangerous-category-4-cyclone-north-of-caribbean\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Hurricane Erin has maximum sustained<\/a>\u00a0winds\u00a0of 100 mph with some higher gusts, and some slow strengthening is expected through Thursday night.<\/p>\n<p>Hurricane-force winds extend outward up to 80 miles from Erin\u2019s center, and tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 265 miles.<\/p>\n<p>Hurricane Erin has maximum sustained\u00a0winds\u00a0of 100 mph with some higher gusts, and some slow strengthening is expected through Thursday night, according to reports.
