JACKSONVILLE BEACH, Fla.<\/strong> \u2013 The waves along the coast caused by Hurricane Erin<\/a>\u2019s offshore intensifying momentum could be inviting to surfers, but officials warn beachgoers about rip currents as they hit the waters.<\/p>\n

Many surfers, like Lily Walker, weren\u2019t intimidated by the seven-foot waves. She took to the water for the second time on Wednesday.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was pretty chunky,\u201d Walker said. \u201cIt was big, but it was really fun.\u201d<\/p>\n

Other surfers, such as Leila Jones, said the rip currents made the water treacherous.<\/p>\n

\u201cI would say, if you\u2019re not experienced and you haven\u2019t surfed a lot don\u2019t do it, it\u2019s not worth it,\u201d Jones warned.<\/p>\n

News4JAX Meteorologist Michelle McCormick said the danger of rip currents would linger for days. <\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s going to be high until late Friday afternoon. There\u2019s a high surf advisory. The waves can grow over the next 24 hours,\u201d McCormick said.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was like fun, some of the rip currents were crazy, and they\u2019d pull you under. But overall, they weren\u2019t the worst. I\u2019ve seen worse and been in worse,\u201d Gavin Bradley said.<\/p>\n

Walker shared a warning for those least experienced swimmers.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf you\u2019re not an experienced swimmer or you don\u2019t have a board, definitely be careful with where you\u2019re swimming,\u201d Walker said. \u201cIt can be very dangerous.\u201d<\/p>\n

The bottom line is that it is not the time to test the waters.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is dangerous surf. The folks we\u2019re seeing have been here for years. They know what they\u2019re doing. They know the precautions. They know the hazards,\u201d McCormick said. \u201cBut it\u2019s not the time to come out here and start experimenting.\u201d<\/p>\n

The high rip current risk is expected to last through late Friday. Experts warn that if swimmers get caught, don\u2019t panic. Float and swim parallel to the shore until you\u2019re free from the current.<\/p>\n
