{"id":16233,"date":"2025-06-26T12:09:08","date_gmt":"2025-06-26T12:09:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/16233\/"},"modified":"2025-06-26T12:09:08","modified_gmt":"2025-06-26T12:09:08","slug":"this-big-number-proves-the-big-beautiful-bill-is-a-loser-for-small-biz-mass-lawmaker-says","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/16233\/","title":{"rendered":"This big number proves the \u2018Big Beautiful Bill\u2019 is a loser for small biz, Mass. lawmaker says"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"YHW73ODVZFECPNWMD7G3MU3XSE\">With Republicans on Capitol Hill racing to get a domestic policy mega-bill onto President Donald Trump\u2019s desk, one Massachusetts lawmaker is drilling into the data to show that it\u2019s bad news for a key part of the White House\u2019s base.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"W6TD27KYCRDMHCNYVYRXOTKVA4\">Namely, the small business owners <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/business\/2025\/mar\/16\/small-business-owners-trump-era\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/business\/2025\/mar\/16\/small-business-owners-trump-era\">who saw a reflection of themselves<\/a> in Trump in 2024, but <a href=\"https:\/\/www.barrons.com\/articles\/small-business-owners-voted-for-trump-they-wont-get-everything-on-their-wish-list-fa623d5e\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.barrons.com\/articles\/small-business-owners-voted-for-trump-they-wont-get-everything-on-their-wish-list-fa623d5e\">since have been buffeted<\/a> by the Republican\u2019s shifting stance on trade and tariffs. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"6XI63J75ERBVFFJ4QVW5WG6ZEY\">Now add the deep cuts to Medicaid, the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (widely known as food stamps) and the expiration of tax credits through the Affordable Care Act envisioned by Trump\u2019s \u201cBig Beautiful Bill,\u201d and that\u2019s a big loser for small business owners, according to U.S. Sen. Ed Markey, D-Mass. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"M5VPXHG3TFH6TCUPH2A4O7SFBM\">In a Thursday letter to U.S. Senate Majority Leader John Thune, R-S.D., and Senate Finance Committee Chairperson Mike Crapo, R-Idaho, Markey noted that 1 in 4 small business owners live in a household that receives health coverage from Medicaid or the Children\u2019s Health Insurance Program, or gets food assistance through SNAP.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"5O5INBH6NVG55NVTUPQSQZM4AM\">Markey was joined in the letter, shared exclusively with MassLive, by U.S. Senate Minority Leader Charles E. Schumer, D-N.Y., and U.S. Sen. Ron Wyden of Oregon, the ranking Democrat on the Senate\u2019s Finance Committee.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"CTWR7UTGIZEB5MYKZZO5WIBUCA\">&#8220;If Republicans gut these programs or allow them to expire, health care costs for small businesses and their families will skyrocket, employees will lose coverage, and entrepreneurs will be stifled. We must expand access to health coverage for all, especially small businesses\u201a&#8221; Markey said in a statement, adding that those same programs are a lifeline for small business owners\u2019 employees and family members.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"4S2YKJON4BHSLN4MB67FDJY3G4\">If it\u2019s approved in its current form, the bill would reduce federal Medicaid spending<a href=\"https:\/\/www.kff.org\/medicaid\/issue-brief\/medicaid-changes-in-house-reconciliation-bill-would-increase-costs-for-1-3-million-low-income-medicare-beneficiaries\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.kff.org\/medicaid\/issue-brief\/medicaid-changes-in-house-reconciliation-bill-would-increase-costs-for-1-3-million-low-income-medicare-beneficiaries\/\"> by $793 billion over 10 years<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"R6P3CMMBK5DJVGW5XDKXB6KREY\">Roughly 4.8 million people would be uninsured nationwide by 2034 based on work requirements in a version of the bill approved by U.S. House Republicans, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/06\/06\/health-insurance-coverage-losses-under-house-gop-tax-spending-bill.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/06\/06\/health-insurance-coverage-losses-under-house-gop-tax-spending-bill.html\">CNBC reported<\/a>, citing data by the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"JGXTGUJAEZAP5DNNGRBDWEZPIY\">In Massachusetts, the bill would cost the state\u2019s health care system $1.75 billion and strip coverage for about 250,000 people, according <a href=\"https:\/\/www.masslive.com\/politics\/2025\/05\/a-historic-battle-mass-pols-protest-medicaid-cuts-in-big-beautiful-bill-john-l-micek.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.masslive.com\/politics\/2025\/05\/a-historic-battle-mass-pols-protest-medicaid-cuts-in-big-beautiful-bill-john-l-micek.html\">to Healey\u2019s office.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"76Y5TSY6LJBIPELXX6XF66I5N4\">Trump has been ramping up the pressure for lawmakers to get the bill on his desk.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"4RRRVC5HLZHLLI4HV6U37FOELY\">\u201cTo my friends in the Senate, lock yourself in a room if you must, don\u2019t go home, and GET THE DEAL DONE THIS WEEK,\u201d Trump <a href=\"https:\/\/truthsocial.com\/@realDonaldTrump\/posts\/114738729363742349\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">wrote Tuesday on Truth Social<\/a>. \u201cWork with the House so they can pick it up, and pass it, IMMEDIATELY. NO ONE GOES ON VACATION UNTIL IT\u2019S DONE.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"NZHALGN2QJCNVPYEWIHADGCL34\">In their letter to Thune and Crapo, Markey and his colleagues pointed to recent polling data, commissioned <a href=\"https:\/\/www.smallbusinessforamericasfuture.org\/who-we-are\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.smallbusinessforamericasfuture.org\/who-we-are\">by an industry trade group<\/a>, showing that nearly 7 in 10 small business owners (68%) opposed cutting health care spending while extending tax cuts for the wealthy \u2212 which the bill would do if Trump signs it into law.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"7SS42RGK65BJNGEX6V5A4P3UPA\">And more than half (55%) of respondents said they, their employees, or their families rely on the premium tax credits offered through ACA Marketplace coverage.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"3WF2B57UPNB67LE7WAH6J3DXFY\">Sixteen million people nationwide would lose coverage because of the changes the GOP bill makes to the ACA, including those tax credits, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kff.org\/policy-watch\/how-will-the-2025-budget-reconciliation-affect-the-aca-medicaid-and-the-uninsured-rate\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.kff.org\/policy-watch\/how-will-the-2025-budget-reconciliation-affect-the-aca-medicaid-and-the-uninsured-rate\/\">according to a KFF analysis<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"77LC3F7OARB3ZBJAJMQ5TFFIS4\">The survey, conducted from June 9 to June 16, sampled the opinions of 574 small business owners. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"V7B46JJJVNBUTGPNL5O52EL72I\">&#8220;Small businesses succeed when their owners and employees are healthy, secure, and financially stable.
