And every New Yorker knows it.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/08\/20\/us-news\/mta-honcho-janno-lieber-brushes-off-concerns-over-subway-price-hike-as-new-yorkers-rip-failing-transit-system-vultures\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Lieber is resorting<\/a> to Team Hochul\u2019s Orwellian-naming schtick for papering over bad news and rotten policy.<\/p>\n<p>As in the faux-wonk term \u201ccongestion pricing\u201d for a $9-per-trip tax that\u2019s still headed back to the originally-planned $15 \u2014 which will doubtless rise on in what Lieber can call \u201ca congestion pricing adjustment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>More mush: Don\u2019t forget that Gov. Kathy Hochul bragged about \u201csaving\u201d New Yorkers money by starting with only $9 when she socked them with that tax, not the full $15?)<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\tMore From\t\t\t\t\t\t\tPost Editorial Board<\/p>\n<p>OK: The subway hike is just a dime, to $3 (for now). <\/p>\n<p>But it comes atop countless other taxes that hit New York residents with the nation\u2019s heaviest state- and local-tax burden.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile a small increase may seem like nothing to you at all, it makes a big difference,\u201d one resident, Hannah Reed, told MTA board members.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\tGet opinions and commentary from our columnists\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p class=\"inline-module__cta\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\tSubscribe to our daily Post Opinion newsletter!\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\tThanks for signing up!\n\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>Yet the brass won\u2019t admit the truth: \u201cI would not call this a hike,\u201d board member\u00a0Neal Zuckerman huffed. It\u2019s \u201ca very gradual raise, and I think very respectful of the inflation and affordability issues.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>What arrogance. As one straphanger, Emmanuel Vasquez, fumed, \u201cThere\u2019s always flooding, there\u2019s always a brake emergency, there\u2019s always a power outage\u201d on the subway, but officials never stop zapping riders with hikes.<\/p>\n<p>And that\u2019s despite the billions the agency collects not just from fares but city, state and federal tax revenue, corporations, individual taxes and, yes, \u201ccongestion pricing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/08\/18\/opinion\/second-avenue-subway-expansion-is-a-mindless-waste-of-money\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">while it diverts money<\/a> to politically-driven projects like Second Avenue Subway expansion: On Monday, the board OK\u2019d a $1.9 billion contract for just a part of project; the final tab will run at least $7 billion for just three new stations.<\/p>\n<p>Lieber &amp; Co. know darn well their repeated dips into New Yorkers\u2019 pockets sting; they just don\u2019t care to admit it.<\/p>\n<p>Why else hide behind weasel words?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"\u201cFare adjustment\u201d: That\u2019s what MTA boss Janno Lieber laughably calls the next subway-fare hike.
